Arnold Winning Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 26, 2025.
Arnold "Arnie" Winning passed away peacefully on March 23, 2025, in Waterloo, Iowa, at the age of 71, surrounded by his loving family and the compassionate staff at Cedar Valley Hospice.

Born on December 25, 1953, Arnie was raised in Waterloo, where he spent most of his life. He embraced every moment and loved sharing stories of his adventures across the country as a young man. A passionate music enthusiast, he attended concerts by legendary rock artists, with favorites including Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, and Jethro Tull. Arnie also had a deep love for animals, especially dogs, and found joy in the great outdoors through fishing, hiking, and camping.

Arnie worked in various trades throughout his life, primarily as a mason, welder, and millwright after completing technical training at Hawkeye Community College (formerly Hawkeye Tech). In retirement, he dedicated time to volunteering at Cedar Valley Hospice and the Senior Center, giving back to his community.

He is survived by his four daughters: Carolyn Baker, Lacy Greenway (Fikret), Ashley Whitesell (Benjamin), and Olivia Winning; six grandchildren: Jonas G., Julien, Callie, Jonas B., Mylee, and Jeramy, five others he loved as his own children; Melissa, Eran, Machalah, Savannah, and Geavonna, as well three siblings; Sandy, Marilynne, and Duane. Arnie was preceded in death by his mother, Esther Winning.

A private gathering to celebrate his life will be held on March 28, 2025.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Cedar Valley Hospice or a charity of choice.

Arnie's love for storytelling, music, and nature left a lasting impression on those who knew him. He will be deeply missed.

I´ll miss Arnie very much, and my heartfelt condolences goes to my step-sisters for their loss. Arnie was a father figure for me through my teenage years. I was fortunate to have his example, to enjoy his company, and for the excellent music, books, comedy and ideas he introduced me to. He was a lot of things to a lot of people - I knew and remember the best of him, and I pray for God to embrace him with love in heaven.
