Arthur Bendelius Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 29, 2025.
Arthur "Art" George Bendelius of Pine Mountain, formerly of Big Canoe and Dunwoody died peacefully on July 4th, 2025. He was the son of the late Arthur L. Bendelius and Lydia Flach Bendelius. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Brown Bendelius. He is survived by his three daughters, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Art was born on May 21, 1936, in Clifton, New Jersey. In high school, Art played clarinet in the band and developed his love of woodworking in shop class. Art attended Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, where he earned both his BS and MMS in engineering, played lacrosse, acted in several plays, became involved with the Sigma Nu fraternity and met the love of his life, Virginia "Ginny" Brown. They were married in 1958 and spent their early married years in New Jersey.

After graduation Art went to work for Parsons, Brinckerhoff, Quade & Douglass and eventually became an expert in tunnel ventilation. Fifteen years and three daughters later they moved to Dunwoody, GA where Art enjoyed watching his daughters grow up. Art worked on numerous engineering projects, both in the United States and internationally. In 2002 Art and Ginny moved to Big Canoe, enjoyed mountain life and traveled extensively, visiting six of the seven continents. Art retired in 2004 and worked as a private consultant on projects for another twelve years. After losing his wife in 2018, Art moved to Callaway Gardens, where he remembers celebrating many happy family Christmases. Art also enjoyed baseball, golf, trains, planes, woodworking and lighthouses. A celebration of Art's life will be held in November in Pine Mountain, Georgia.

Excerpt from "Ode to Art Bendelius" written by R.S. Brindley in 1989.

"Here's to our friend, the man named "Art"

Everyone likes him, cause he has a big heart.

He frowns and he growls, and makes a big scene,

But we know that inside, he isn't so mean."

We are saddened at the loss of Mr. Bendelius. He and his family were our neighbors in Westwood N.J. for many years. The three girls were friends with my three girls. Art and his wife Ginny will both be remembered for their kindness and friendship. Art made it a point to visit us in California when he was in town and it was good to see an old friend. His picture shows the great smile and warmth he exuded. Our condolences to the girls and their families at his loss. Cathy and Courtland Gibson

I am deeply saddened to read this message. I met Art first time on the occasion of a PIARC TC meeting somewhere in Europe. Art was an outstanding personality, both professionally and, more importantly, personally. Our personal friendship and the meetings we had with him and his wife will always remain a fond memory for me.
His commitment to Graz and TU Graz was expressed, among other things, by his long-standing membership in the scientific committee of the International Conference on Safety and Ventilation of Tunnels.
Art, I'll miss you.
