I just found out about Art a few days ago.Doris, you know that I always thought he was great.I remember getting you guys tickets to see Paul McCartney.Just shows the man had great taste in music. I know this is probably the hardest loss you have experienced and it will take time.I am glad your kids are close by and that the grandchildren are too.Take care of yourself.

Art was a wonderful person! He was incredible. Interested in science but also in you. I had the pleasure of knowing him for more than 40 years and loved him as an older brother and mentor. The world is diminished with his passing.

Dear Doris,
I was very sad to learn of Art's recent passing. He was blessed to have had such a kind and devoted life partner and best friend as you, and I know that you gave Art much happiness and fulfillment over your years together. Know that Maria and I are thinking of you in this sad time.
It is a cliché to refer to someone recently deceased as a special person. But in Art's case, "special" is a great understatement. Beyond his impressive technical accomplishments, he was a warm, generous man who seems to have made everyone who had ever worked with him grateful to have had the opportunity. It is poetic that Art's most celebrated scientific contributions are in the field of magnetism, because by far the most magnetic thing about Art was himself! What always impressed me most about Art was that whenever he appeared at a gathering where any number of his former students and junior colleagues congregated, they flocked around him, delighted with his company. I know that the atmosphere of bonhomie that seemed to perpetually surround him was due in considerable degree to the fact that Art genuinely cared about his students and junior colleagues, and they knew it. For me, if there is one word that comes to mind that epitomizes Art, it would be mentor. He was the quintessential mentor. In my own forty some odd years in science, I cannot recall another individual who seems to have engendered the same warmth among his many former associates as he. The Art Institute, as another of Art's colleagues called the extended family of peers, and intellectual children and grandchildren (i.e., students of Art's students), was truly unique in my professional experience. I feel privileged to have been able to feel a part of that family for a time.
Doris, Maria and I wish you comfort and love in the bosom of your family and friends, as your sadness turns slowly to fond memories. I will certainly never forget Art.

It was a time for mourning and lamentation. Many unforgettable periods come back to my memory. Professor Freeman's intelligence, diligence and exploring spirit influenced many of us who has the luck of working with him. He cared about us visitors also made deep impression in my mind. I want also to tell Dear Doris, take good care of yourself, that must be what Art wants to see too.

As I read this tonight there was a place in my heart that broke, I felt the tear that is now permanent. Arthur, my dear friend, my mentor, you are a man I love dearly and you will never be forgotten but will always be in my heart. I miss you so very much.
Doris, my heart also aches for you and the family. Know that I care and am always here for you. He loved you more than life itself.
Love, Mary Lesniak
