Arthur E. Lewis M.D.

August 1935 - January 11, 2016 August 1935 - January 11, 2016 Arthur Ernest Lewis was born in Los Angeles, the only child of Elizabeth Simonson and Alwin Wachendorf Lewis. He spent his early years learning to play the piano and to appreciate the nature that surrounded his Baldwin Hills neighborhood.In 1957, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from USC, where he was a Phi Gamma Delta. He attended Tulane University School of Medicine, from which he earned his medical degree in 1961. Upon completion of his internship at Orange County General Hospital, he joined the Burbank Medical Clinic as a Family Practitioner, with a special interest in Dermatology. He married Diana Dee Sinclair in 1966. Art's medical practice of nearly 40 years was interrupted by 2 years of service in the U.S. Army (1967-1969). He attained the rank of Major and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service in Vietnam. Upon returning stateside, prior to returning to Burbank, he was stationed at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona, where he was able to pursue his passion for collecting long horn beetles. This passion continued throughout his life, and he made several important scientific contributions, including the identification and description of two species of previously unknown beetles. Art loved to travel, and he and Dee explored the four corners of the earth. He continued to love music and played classical piano throughout his life. Art's life was characterized by infectious curiosity, love of family and friends, and joy for life.He is survived by his wife, Diana; his son, Alwin C. Lewis, M.D., his daughter-in-law Gordana Lewis, their sons, Brenton and Blake Lewis,; his son, Todd C. Lewis, M.D., his daughter-in-law, Michelle Lewis, M.D., J.D., and their sons, Carter and Spencer Lewis. Services were private
