Arthur LIPMAN Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Aug. 26 to Aug. 28, 2014.
LIPMAN, Arthur
March 6, 1914 - August 23, 2014
Born March 6, 1914, to Edward and Sarah Lipman in Blackpool, Lancashire and grew up in St. Annes -on-Sea. After studying at Cambridge, he travelled through Europe and South America. Finding himself in the Amazon at the outbreak of WW II, he began making his way back to England to enlist, but decided to stop in Canada and join the RCAF thereby meeting and marrying his beloved wife Lucille (neé Kaminer), who passed away, too young in 1971. In 1947, following the birth of daughter Nicola, they moved from Canada to Brazil where their son Ted was born, returning to Vancouver in 1958, where Arthur was first, controller for Spillsbury and Tindall, and later a stock broker for Bache and Co. After retiring at 68, he returned to university, UBC, where he received his degree in Creative Writing and English graduating (as valedictorian) at 72! He had a huge personal library; a passionate and private person and a poet, he golfed, skied, cycled, swam, loved music, theatre, travel, cryptic crosswords, scrabble, read constantly late into the night, and was a fantastic dancer. His especial loves were poetry, Jewish History and (before and after Lucille) beautiful and intelligent women. Highly opinionated and stubborn, he was also thoughtful , loving and stoic, always supportive and caring to his children, and his granddaughter Eva who he adored. He lived to be 100 years and 5 months old and took inordinate pleasure in his birthday greetings from the Queen. He made an enormous difference in the lives of people who knew him. Funeral Services will be held at the Congregation Beth Israel Cemetery, 11:30 a.m. Friday, August 29 at 1721 Willingdon Ave. Bby. (across from Brentwood Mall).

While I didn´t know him during his lifetime, i just walked past Arthur´s bench in Tatlow Park, commemorating his 90th birthday. The description of his character perked my interest and what a joy it was to find out that Arthur continued to live this most excellent life of his for yet another decade!

Having known Arther during the 80's with my wife Hoi-Yin and our first born son Nicholas, we enjoyed Arhtur's love of life and shared many weekends trying out new things to do. An Arthur's quote which I always remembered is " Life really started for me after I retired in my fifties ". Dearest Arthur, the Chan family will miss you much but you can never be gone from our thoughts.

Ted, your Dad bore a remarkable resemblance to mine. That, if you recollect, resulted in much mischief being visited upon my Dad in relation to Chinatown eateries. But, despite protestations to the contrary, I think, at the end of the day, that my Dad took it in the humour by which it was intended, by yours. After all, your Dad was always a " fun " guy !
I represent all members of my family in extending condolences to you and yours.

Our prayers and condolences to the Lipman family. My husband and I met Arthur a few years ago when we bought his 1962 gold Thunderbird. We were saddened to hear of his passing and remembered the few hours spent with him that day.He graciously showed us around his home and I admired the beautiful furniture purchased from around the world. He also spoke of his family and we saw today
the picture of him with his beautiful granddaughter in the Sun. On a cloudless day we take "the Bird" to White Rock beach and get a lot of "thumbs up"from old and young alike!Next time we'll do it in memory of Arthur.Shalom
