I loved seeing Art at Mukilteo Historical Society meetings because he was such a wonderful person, because he and his family are such a central part of old town history, and because we were both mariners

Art was A Mentor to me.

Clementine Hobson and family

October 28, 2019

We want to express our heartfelt condolences to each of the Losvar family members. Art was a wonderful friend and coworker of our husband/father George Hobson. Arthur George and George Arthur were fortunate to have spent time together on the tugs, each others homes and on the phone, making sure they did not lose contact. Art was appreciated and respected for the man he was. May you all find comfort in knowing Art and Connie's friendship was a friendship to be thankful for.

Reading Art's obituary triggered a flood of memories from my youth spent growing up in Mukilteo. As young boys, Jimmy Lalone, Mickey Baker and I would spend a good portion of our summers wandering between Edgewater Beach and the docks and boathouses on the Mukilteo waterfront. Losvar's Boathouse was one of our favorite haunts. We loved watching the boats going up and down on the launch, especially when an amateur skipper was at the helm of an incoming boat and couldn't get it positioned properly on the cart. We were fascinated by the guys working on engines in the shop and marveled at the size and the horsepower (50 hp! Wow!) of the shiny new Evinrude outboards in the showroom. We asked a way too many questions and were no doubt basically underfoot, but all the Losvars, and especially Art, always treated us kindly and with respect. Art's passing truly does mark the end of an era. My sincere condolences to the Losvar family.

Art and boat Topsy.

Art visited us in September 2002 when he ran his boat from Mukilteo to Stuart Island and back. We insisted that he spend the night. We had a great time discussing our shared family history. His grandfather, P.N. Christiansen, encouraged his sister's family to emigrate from Norway to Stuart Island. Art was able to help us with the history of the Turn Point Lighthouse where his grandpa was an early keeper. RIP Art.

Condolences from the Jim and Don Benson families. Art and Connie were close boat racing friends to the Al Benson family from the 1940s through the late 1980s. Connie would baby sit my brother Don and I at their prominent two-story hillside home overlooking Puget Sound in Mukilteo, Washington, when Art and my parents would go boat racing. We also would stop by and make numerous visits when we took the ferry on our way to boat races and friends in the Hoods Canal area or the Olympic Peninsula.

Art was a highly respected champion and record-setting outboard raceboat driver. Among his many accolades, he won the Midget Hydro Outboard Class at the 1941 Pacific Coast Championships on Lake Washington (Seward Park) and victorious in his various classes in the Sammamish Slough Races of 1942, 1951 and 1958. I covered many of his racing adventures, including the Slough Races, in my book Taming of the Slough (published 2018 on Amazon). I interviewed Art on the phone in 2014 gathering research material for the book. Art remembered me, my parents and the Slough Races. At about age 90, he still had fond memories of winning races in the annual Slough Race dubbed the Crookedest Race in the World.

Aside from racing and family visits, my brother and I have exciting memories of riding and fishing in the famous Muk or Mukilteo Boats the Losvar family built and rented out of their Mukilteo Boat House. The popular and uniquely-crafted runabouts, were specially built for rowing and outboarding in the challenging waters of Puget Sound. We loaded all our gear and climbed ourselves into one of the 18-foot Muk rental boats, with outboard motor on stern, all sitting on top of a rail cable cart high out of the water next to the Boat House. Then our father gave the ready-to-launch command to Art and we were sent coasting over two steel train type rails down into Puget Sound. From there we were swiftly launched into the cold sea water, where dad started the motor and were off for a wonderful day of fishing and sightseeing. I recently read articles online about people who own a coveted Mukilteo Boatsome restored and others as is, still in usable condition.
