Arthur Pollock Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 6, 2018.
Arthur David Pollock, age 68, of Sharon, Massachusetts died peacefully at home on July 6th, surrounded by a family that loved him dearly. For nearly 40 years Arthur was the beloved husband of Judy Cockerton. He was the devoted father of Jesse, Jenna and Brianna Pollock; loving son of the late Max and Diana Pollock; and cherished brother of Gloria Milner.

Born in Brooklyn, New York and raised on Long Island, Arthur was passionate about many things in life, especially photography, music and movies. He enjoyed good food, whether making homemade pizza with his youngest daughter every Wednesday night or dining out in a fancy restaurant. A bag of fresh bagels was always in his arms when he went to work on Saturdays.

Arthur loved his work. For almost fifty years Arthur was a dedicated photojournalist who spent the majority of his career as a Photographer and Photo Editor at the Boston Herald. Beginning with his time at The Daily Cardinal (University of Wisconsin – Madison) and the start of his professional life in Hammond, Indiana and Lowell, Massachusetts, he documented day to day life in the communities he served. Hired on staff at the Boston Herald in the early eighties, he worked assignments around the world and on major features like the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion.

Arthur's passion for photography led him to receive numerous awards throughout his time in the field, including the World Press Award and National Press Photographers Association Picture of the Year. In 2011, a book of his photographs was published by Unpiano Books and exhibited in San Francisco. His iconic photos of Boston, represented by Magnum Photos, continue to reach people all over the world.
Arthur loved and admired his three children. A parent by birth and by adoption, he supported children and youth living in foster care by providing seed funding for the award winning Treehouse Foundation and ongoing financial support for Birdsong Farm's animal therapy programs.

Arthur also enjoyed contributing his time at Camp To Belong Massachusetts, a program designed to reunite sisters and brothers who are separated when placed in foster care. For over a decade, Arthur could be found at CTB MA taking photos of campers and making videos of their sibling adventures.
Graveside services at the Beth David Cemetery, 300 Elmont Ave., Elmont, NY on Sunday, July 8th at 11:45am. Shiva will be observed in New York on Sunday and Monday from 2:00-6:00pm. Shiva will continue in Sharon on Tuesday through Thursday from 6:00-8:00pm. A celebration of Arthur's life will be held in Boston. Details will be shared at a later date.

Sandi and I are very sorry to hear about Arthur's death. Over the last 23 years, we'd had several very enjoyable chats with him as we worked outdoors in our neighboring yards. Although we only got brief glimpses of him during those talks, it was clear that he was a very bright and thoughtful soul who had a passion for photography and a nicely wry and gentle sense of humor. We send our condolences to Judy, their children, and all of their family and friends.
