Asa Tibbs Obituary

Published by The Star Democrat from Apr. 11 to Apr. 12, 2017.
The Artist. The Musician. The Writer.
"Asa G. Tibbs, also known as Garnett, never thought in my conscious mind that I would be writing my own obituary with my left hand-" to be continued …
Before he could finish the rest of his story, Asa passed peacefully at his home on April 6, 2017, surrounded by loved ones, good friends, good books and good music.
He was known for his wit and infinite wisdom, and was deeply loved and respected in his community for his art and music. Asa loved to philosophize and converse with everyone he met, most assuredly ending in laughter. He was a self-taught musician and artist, always welcome to sit in with many local bands across the region. Asa had an affinity for fine clothing, Starbucks coffee, quality pens, fancy shoes and hats, guitars, and his beloved harmonica collection. He was a lifelong learner and at 65 years of age, Asa earned his Master's Degree from Washington College.
He was born in Lynchburg, VA, on June 24, 1948, son of Asa D. and Faye B. Tibbs. He is survived by his daughter, Katie Brooke Tibbs; his mother, Faye Tibbs; his brothers: Dale and H. Lee Tibbs; several nieces and nephews; and grand-dog, Hana.
Asa served in the U.S. Army from 1969-70 during the Vietnam War. His final resting place will be at Arlington National Cemetery, where he will be commemorated with full veteran honors.
Asa desired to leave a legacy by contributing to cancer research, and his wish was fulfilled.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Johns Hopkins University Department of Pathology Rapid Autopsy Program Fund Drive - Dr. Jody Hooper, c/o Robert Kahl, Dept. of Pathology, Johns Hopkins Medicine, 600 N. Wolfe St., Carnegie 424, Baltimore, MD 21287-6417.
An open house memorial will be held at the Avalon Theatre in Easton, MD, on Friday, April 14, from 6-10 p.m. Katie and his family welcome you to join in celebrating Asa's unfinished life.

I briefly knew Asa in Salisbury when we worked together (guessing about 1987) he made a good enough impression upon me that i looked him up all thes 35 years - I hope he is resting in peace.

A fine musician and an even finer person. Kind, thoughtful and soft-spoken, he'll be missed.

Asa touched many people in the community but probably no one more than the musicians he jammed with and collaborated with. His "harp" skills were appreciated by all. Although I didn't see him often he always had a smile and made me feel like his friend. I know he had many difficult challenges but I never heard him complain. May God bless him with sweet music in Heaven for eternity.

Faye, Dale, Lee and family, you are in our thoughts and prayers! Garnett was a unique individual who followed the beat of his own drummer. He was a person who was always had a smile and time to spend with you talking and listening. I looked to him as an older brother as I grew up! He was a sincere and honest person who will be missed by all who knew him!

Asa was a free spirit. Everyone loved listening to his stories. Katie....he was so proud of you....his greatest accomplishment. I know he died at peace having you by his side. He was a writer, an artist and loved playing harmonica. On Friday his life will be celebrated.
Hugs,
Aunt Kim
