Audrey Daigle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 6, 2009.
ANSON - Audrey S. Daigle, 68, passed away Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at her home. She was born Sept. 3, 1940, the daughter of the late Overton S. Stuteville and Olive A. Gilpatrick. She graduated from Old Town High School, Class of 1958, attended schools in Quincy, Mass., and Portsmouth, N.H., and took classes at the University of Maine. Audrey worked for Fernald's Market, Madison, and then at the University of Maine at Augusta for Women Working Community, where she retired from in 2003, due in part to her health and wanting to enjoy her family full-time, as well as her hobbies and adventures. Audrey was an avid NASCAR fan, her favorite driver was Carl Edwards. She and Gil attended races each year, and she spent endless hours watching races at home with Gil. Audrey loved working in the many flowerbeds around her home until neuropathy, due to her chemotherapy sessions, took the use of her hands and feet. Audrey was active with the Democratic Party for many years, which she fully enjoyed. She was a candidate for state senator in 1998. She was involved for many years with Hospice and Displaced Homemakers. She was a member of Maine Media Women and National Federation of Press Women, a member of Women's Business Development Corp. and Public Information, and advocacy coordinator of Maine Displaced Homemakers Project. She was a 20-year member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a 24-year member of American Legion Post No. 39 Ladies Auxiliary. She remained active with these organizations until severe chemotherapy related neuropathy made it impossible. Audrey was well known for her dedication as well as her full-time passion for helping others. She was predeceased by her first husband, Paul J. Daigle Jr.; her son, Prescott J. "Rocky" Daigle; and a stepson, Gilman W. Page III. She is survived by her husband of 191/2 years, Gilman W. Page; her children, Paul J. Daigle III and his wife, Cheryl, of Anson, Peter J. Daigle and his wife, Garna, of Santa Rosa, Calif., Patrick J. Daigle and fiancee, Vickie Washburn, of Anson, Pamela J. (Daigle) Dickey of Anson, and Priscilla J. Daigle of Portland; stepsons, Mike Page and his wife, Sue, of Portland, Tony Page and fiancee, Cindy, of Massachusetts, Andrew Page of Virginia, and Tim Page of Falmouth; a brother, Douglas W. Stuteville of Oakland, Calif.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren that she will be sadly missed by. Audrey's family sends a special thank you to the wonderful women of Androscoggin Home Health workers, who spent the last year with Mom in her home therapies. A special thank you to Pat Sullivan for her involvement and helping Mom, and to Gil for his endless hours and involvement. At Audrey's request, services will be provided by past presidents of American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at American Legion Post No. 39, 20 South Maple St., Madison. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial contribution to the Department of Maine American Legion Auxiliary, 1047 South St., Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426, for the benefit of Auxiliary Emergency Fund, Special Olympics and Beals House.

What a great friend your mom was to me when I was also a young mother. She had three little boys who played in the back yard with my two little girls. I often come across the picture of the girls and two little Daigle boys sitting on a bleacher at the football field in Madison and all the memories of what a great friend she was to me fill my heart with love. My prayers are with each of you at the time.

I am so very sorry to hear of Audrey's difficult battle with cancer and her passing. We had many laughs and serious talks as well together as we travelled to Regional and National board meetings connected to our work with Women, Work and Community. She was deeply committed to the empowerment of people in disadvantaged situations; and loyal to providing service to her various communities of friends and coworkers.
