AUDREY LEA Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Dec. 14, 2012.
LEA, Audrey Sanborn
1922 - 2012
Audrey Sanborn Lea, known as Aud, and affectionately as "Aunt Aud" to her numerous nieces and nephews and their children, died on December 4th, 2012 at the age of 90. She was a resident of Vancouver, B.C. at the time of her death. She succumbed to old age. She is remembered by her nieces and nephews for her artistic ability and her love of horses which she shared with them. She was warm and loving to them all and always remembered them on birthdays and holidays. She will be remembered for her great sense of humor and artistic ability. She lovingly cared for her Mother, Abby for many years. Audrey was born on August 12, 1922 in Oakland, California. She was the 4th and last living child of James Thomas and Abby Delinah Sanborn Lea. Her older siblings, James Millard Lea, Marjorie Lea McClelland, and Helen Abby Lea McCartney, predeceased her. She was also preceded in death by her nephew, James McCartney, and great-nephew David Payne. Never married, she doted on her nieces and nephews, namely Pamela, daughter of James Millard Lea; Catherine McClelland Crosby, Elizabeth Ann McClelland, and Thomas Campbell McClelland, children of Marjorie McClelland; and Edward McCartney, James McCartney, and Daniel McCartney, sons of Helen McCartney, as well as their children. Audrey worked at the Executives Association of San Francisco as Administrative Assistant to Frank Thrall, and assumed the duties as executive after his death in 1961. She was greatly respected for her organizational abilities and the artistic flair she gave to this position. When her sister, Marjorie, moved with her family to Canada, Audrey followed a few years later. She worked for the PBS auction and related activities for some years, retiring at the age of 70. She enjoyed her life in Vancouver until a series of little strokes and increasing dementia caused her to enter long-term care where she remained until her death. She is the youngest and last of her siblings to expire, and is survived by Pamela Powers, Catherine Crosby, Elizabeth McClelland, Thomas McClelland, Edward McCartney and his wife, Cynthia, and Daniel McCartney and his wife, Katherine. She is also survived by their children: James John Springfield and Theodosia Dawn Payne (Pamela Powers), Peter G. Coode, Christopher M. Coode and Julie C. Crosby (Catherine Crosby), Jeffrey R. Keohane (Elizabeth McClelland), Donald McCartney, Elisabeth McCartney, Kristin McCartney Mann and her husband Dave (Edward McCartney); Patrick McCartney and Michael McCartney (Daniel McCartney). She is also survived by 4 great- grandnephews, 2 great-grandnieces, and 5 great- great-grandnieces and one great-great- grandnephew. The service shall be held at Royal Oak and Canada Way Crematorium on Saturday, Dec 15th at 9:30 a.m. Those who wish to attend are strongly encouraged to do so, however she is going to be cremated, so those who don't want to bear witness, but who would like to attend the luncheon instead. Those people can meet at 2962 Starlight Way, Coquitlam, BC. In lieu of flowers a donation in memory of Audrey Sanborn Lea may be made to Chris Coode 604-464-1691, or to the Catherine Jane McClelland Memorial Fund at the Vancouver Foundation, Suite 1200 555 West Hastings Street, Box 12132, Harbour Centre, Vancouver, B.C.
