August Booth Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 29, 2007.
BOOTH DR. AUGUST MARSHALL, JR.
Age 72, (retired), was an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Pharmacology at the University of Pittsburgh for 25 years. He died peacefully surrounded by his family on November 26, 2007 at Shadyside Hospital from complications of Ocular Melanoma. Dr. Booth, a resident of Pittsburgh for over 50 years, was born in Washington, D.C. and attended school in Arlington, VA. He came to Pittsburgh to attend Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1953. His early work was in both the theater and the recording industry. He worked in the Pittsburgh Playhouse and Arena Stage in Washington D.C. He was sound engineer on the movie "Night of the Living Dead". After the death of his first wife, Lois Woods Booth and his son August, he attended the University of Pittsburgh where he earned both his bachelor of science and his doctor of Philosophy degrees. Here he met his second wife Ivy Bunting Booth. They were later divorced. An accomplished musician he enjoyed classical music and was an early supporter of WQED FM and the Pittsburgh Symphony. Also, a diesel Mercedes Benz enthusiast he was known as "Der Dieseling Doktor" and spent many hours researching the best ways to perform repairs and to improve the performance of diesel cars. He is survived by his daughters Sharon Murray Booth and Margaret Megan (Booth) Gallek, his fiancee Linda Carter Bell and two grandsons, all of Pittsburgh. Dr. Booth donated his body for scientific research, a celebration of his life will be held at a future date. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Hillman Cancer Center.

Wow time flies. I didn't know of Mr. Booths passing until recently. As so many others have said, he will be missed. I hope your family has fared well in the time since his passing.

Dr. Booth was always available with his EXCELLENT advice, an email away.
I learned so MUCH more about my W123 because of him. I really appreciated, as much as his insights, the willingness to educate other enthusiasts.
Marshall’s wisdom extended far beyond simple vehicular matters, he gave freely knowledge, which he knew was the greater good. Your legacy lives on every time I hear the sewing machine precision of my 617. Rest in peace Dr. Booth.

I live in Malta a very small island in the mediterranean. I know Dr. Booth through his posts on the internet since I am a DIY.
Dr. Booth would reply with meticulous precession, clearly highlighting the reasoning too. No MB Mechanic would come close. I used to give them the mail and they learned, that if its from MB Marchal Booth (not MB Mercedes Benz) they would simply follow it through and it would work.
Today I went to search and in an exchange of mail on MB I read that he had passed away.
I am so unhappy and sad!
Dear Marchall you will be missed by so many throughout the world.
Your contribution and assistance was priceless.
I love my Benz but it fails like any other car. You support made it a machine I can depend on.
I do not know what to say.
I will simply be sad, very sad everytime I think that the Merc that kept going with your free help is here still but you are gone.
My deepest condolances to his wife and family.
Marchall you had a great heart. I am sure that Jesus Mary and Joseph welcomed you with open arms.
God bless you.

Marshall booth helped me out various times on the online MBCA forums.
i was always struck by his knowledge.
there are a lot of people saying things about cars and about mercedes in particular on the internet..but he knew.
You will be missed dear Marshall.
You were in a different league.

I am sorry for finding out so late, i wish i had known earlier.

I knew Marshall only through his posts on the list and had admired him for his clear concise and often humorous advice he offered those who signed their posts. Just before he passed he took the time to answer my plaintive request for help when my son and I were In Minnesota in a w123 gas wagon and I was very troubled by how my car was running in the -16 degree temps. His diagnosis from far away was simple, accurate and rescued me from a crippling crisis of confidence. I have been grateful of his wisdom and time in helping me,a stranger to him,and have made an effort to pay that dept forward at every opportunity. Thank you Marshall.

I first met Marshall Booth, when he came to Falls Church to attend a high school reunion, and escorted Linda Carter Bell to the event. (Linda was my landlady at the time.)What a fascinating and wonderful soul he was! As evidenced by the many responses here, he touched so many in so many different fields of interest. I always enjoyed his stories, marveled at his technical skills, and chuckled at his wit.
My deepest sympathies to Sharon, Margaret, Linda, Will & Julie.

I first met Marshall at Hardman Studios in 1971, where I was installing some recording equipment. His knowledge of Ampex tape machines and willingness to help a struggling young engineer were just a small part of his unique character. I will miss your astute observations and your quick wit.

I didn't personally know Dr. Booth. I read many of the posts he made on some Mercedes forums. At the same time I felt that I knew him through the remarkable physiology, pharmacology, and biology professors who prodded and encouraged me throughout my training as a Respiratory Therapist. He reminded me of a particular Physiology professor I had (Dr. Chester Hendricks). He was tough, but first and formost, he was a teacher. He was also a guy that you could have a beer with and shoot the breeze. Sadly, Dr. Hendricks is gone as well. We are more prosperous because we knew people like Dr's Booth and Hendricks. They are dearly missed.

Marshall and I were able to get together a few times over the years, and the last time was a few years ago during my high school reunion in Washington, DC and Marshall was in fine fettle and picked me up in his yellow 190D and we found a nice restaurant for lunch, and it was really terrific because I had the undivided attention of the true Master of the Universe when it came to 190 diesels! (I have one too). I had actually saved up questions for that day, and it was all good. He's in a better place now, and I'm sure he's looking down at all of us whenever we hover over our engines with wrenches in our hands.

Like so many of us I only knew Marshall though our common love of Mercedes Benz automobles. What ever the question, if it involved a diesel Mercedes he always had the answer. I feel a loss that we never were able to meet face to face. My belated sympathies go out to his family and to all of us. We have lost a good friend.

Marshall was a very fine brother-in-law to me. He was always supportive and understanding. What I'll miss most is our wonderful phone conversations. We would talk about subjects ranging from physics to physiology to music to stereo systems. Mostly we would talk about good music and how to best reproduce it. We only talked about Mercedes Diesels a little, but I'm sure that his knowledge and understanding of sound reproduction was every bit on par with his diesel knowledge. I am sure that this is true for every field that he took interest in. I always felt better after a good conversation with Marshall. I will truly miss him.

I would like to offer my condolences to the family of Marshall. I knew him only through the Mercedes-Benz Club forums and I was amazed by his wealth of knowledge, regarding Mercedes-Benz diesels. His general club demeanor was one of well-informed and polite participant and I for one, always looked forward to his posts. (Marshall, for all it is worth, the “Italian tune-up” idea worked wonderfully well for my old 1979 300td station wagon!)

I haven’t been to the forums in a while and the news of his passing was quiet unexpected. Again, please accept my condolences.

Marshall was a wealth of knowledge. He went out of his way to share what he knew with fellow car enthusiasts, newcomers and veterans alike, making car ownership easier and more enjoyable for everyone. I never had the privilege of meeting him in person. When corresponding in e-mails, I knew that I was in contact with a great man.

December 7, 2007

Although I was aware of Marshall's interest and devotion to MB cars, his love of music and the science of sound, they were areas we rarely spoke about. I was his next door neighbor from 1964 until he moved into his Squirrel Hill home with Linda and remained in touch with him until his untimely death. Our discussions involved the medical field (Iam a nurse), our children, spouses/partners, grandkids and the general state of the world. But what will remain with me always is how often we laughed together. No matter how serious the subject, amusement hovered. Perhaps I was coming home from work and he was in his backyard tinkering with one of his beloved Mercedes. Or perhaps we begged rides from one another into Oakland when one of our cars was "sick". There was never a dull or quiet moment: we always had something to talk about and always there was laughter.
Marshall approached his illness the same way he approached MB problems. He did his research, he asked the right questions, he sought appropriate council, he applied recommended solutions and above all, he was realistic about the end results. If he had been a Mercedes, he would still be purring. I think the Lord was having trouble with one of His chariots and needed Marshall's help. Our loss. Farewell, my friend. Your loved ones know I mourn along with them.

Dear Marshall what a man he was, knowledgeable in so many areas always ready to help anyone who wanted it. I exchanged many emails with him over the years and enjoyed his contributions to the Mercedes list, reading every one of them. The Marshall Plan as his process of replacing fuses is called by the list members will live on in our cars. My heart goes out to Linda who has been dealt a double hammer blow.

After reading many of these posts in honor of Marshall, it's clear that I am one of many folks who greatly benefited from his expertice and great willingness to share.

I find it amazing that one person who was not a public figure can have influenced so many people. But that probably indicates something about that person. It takes a great person to have a great impact.

I find that truly great people are usually generous. If that is indeed a measure of greatness, then Marshall was truly a great man for he was exceedingly generous with his time, knowledge, and experience. I'm not sure I can even count the number of times that I have benefitted from his generosity. And I am just one of many hundreds, or hundreds of thousands! I happen to be referring to mechanical insight to my Mercedes cars, but as generous as he was in that area, I'm sure he was just as generous in other areas of life.

Because so many of us have learned so much from from this one area of his life, it will be many, many, many years before the effects of his gifts will cease circulating.

Thank you, Marshall!!

Dr. Booth was one of the FINEST men I never met. He was always willing to go out of his way to find the few technical details to help me and others that he didn't have at his finger tips. His sense of humor and propriety (I will not answer unsigned posts) will be missed as much as his knowledge.

Having grown up with Mercedes Benz I was petrified of the maintenance of owning one. However, reading Dr. Booth's entries is one of the primary reasons that I now own several of these automobiles. The greatest gift I know of that one can give to another is the light associated with knowledge leading in turn to self empowerment. Dr. Booth, it would seem, was a master of many things not the least of which was the enlightment he gave others to believe in themselves.

Those of us who shared his love for Mercedes' would hang on his each word in an email. We always realized we were in the presence of greatness. Our feeble attempts to thank him for his continuous sharing of knowledge were always met with awe inspiring humility. We all are much poorer because of his passing.

Dr. Booth:

Over time I came to value your responses to diesel-related questions posted on Mercedes Forums. What I appreciated most was that you, authoritatively, shared what you knew but candidly bowed to that which you would not support.

I am reminded:

"He who knows and knows that he knows; he is a wise man. Seek him."

Rest in peace!

I did not know Mr Booth personally but met me via his contributions to my trivial motoring issues. He was so detail oriented in his responses and knowledge on vehicles. My heart felt condolence to his family.

My sincere condolences to Marshall's family. I should certainly like to have met him in person but I value having corresponded with him many times on the Diesel Benz list and by e-mail. His advice was very highly regarded by members of his 'other' family - it's difficult to believe that his MB postings will no longer be there to bring good-sense, experience, research and wisdom to the list. His were always the first postings I read. Bless you, Marshall, and farewell.

As one of the many who knew Marshall only from his writing about Mercedes Benz issues, his encyclopedic knowledge and lucid writing will be certainly missed. Happy motoring, Herr Doktor!

Marshall Booth was the only person I knew who owned more 190 Diesels than me, and the only other person I knew that had a european one. I learned so much from his posts with the Mercedes Benz Club. His death is truly our loss.
