My condolences to all of August's loved ones -- he spoke of you all with such affection. I thought of August today when I found the copy of The Intimacy he had given to me after I had taken care of him; I was his nurse years ago in Savannah GA once. He opened up to me and we had wonderful conversations for a short period of time -- I had hoped there would be more. He was a warm, gracious and beautiful person. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and my prayers are with you all. God speed August!

August was such a live wire, it is hard to believe he has died. He was brilliant and had so many wonderful thoughts and ideas. I have known him for 20 years and he was just one of those people who would pop in and out of our lives, The planet is sadder without him.
All my heartfelt sympathy for his boys and family and friends....

I offer my deepest condolence to the family. Dr. Coppola had the greatest effect on the richness and direction of my life and ultimately creating a vista that I was able to offer my children. I was a student in his Cal State Long Beach comparative lit/film classes during 1965-6 and 1970-71 (Army gave me a break). He created a feast of culture and ideas and challenges that stretched our minds. His spirit is immortalized by the lasting effect that I believe will spread through generations.

Bravo, August Coppola, you did well.

Chers tous,

Dear All,
I spent a few extraordinnary evenings with August in Paris in a small italian restaurant rue des Cannettes. He was fun and brilliant. I thought we had plenty of time to meet again in Savannah...
Never postpone the pleasure that life offers today. Be strong and united he loved you all that way...

We where not far from a Theater where we had to go see Martine... But he'd seen the play already... So we talked the World over instead ... it was fun. Whatever you do have fun. Life is too short play it well.

Coppola Family:

I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Coppola at San Francisco State University in the late 1980s -- the Purple Globe Awards. It was an amazing experience that I will cherish always.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Peace to you,

Dear Nicolas,

My heart goes out to you and yours at this time. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting your father, you spoke of him often and I know how you loved him. Losing a parent touches us in deep ways and often causes us to do heavy soul searching. May your memories of your amazingly creative father comfort you and continue to be a driving force in your life.

Always, Peri W

I have known August for over 10 years and was so saddened to hear of his recent death. August and I worked together in the evenings working on 4 of his books. I was his typist and he would dictate to me. We had many a laugh together. He taught me so much about literature and the arts. He was totally amazing. After his move to Newport Beach, California, we spoke several times on the phone making revisions on his latest book.

I have many fond memories of August and will cherish the wonderful relationship that we had.

My condolences to you Lorrie and the rest of the Coppola family.

My sincerest heartfelt sympathies to the Coppola Family:

I can't describe the pain I feel upon hearing of this, I feel completely crushed. I was waiting on a reply from August on whether or not he could use my latest couple of paintings I had sent him thru email, we had been collaborating closely for the past year on the book he was working on finishing up within the next few weeks. He was going to have my work featured as plates in his book.

Please, please, can anyone out there contact the relevant persons with this message and give them my email. I can supply them with any necessary information, I can also do my part in any finalizing that may need to be done with the book. Throughout the creation process of collaboration we had reached such a level of intimacy, my art often intuitively reflecting his narrative. I would love to see this project come to fruition, he had worked so long on it, and he was so close to getting it published, can we still make this book part of his legacy?

Sincerely, still waiting in expectation to hear back from August ..

To the entire Coppola family,
I only had the pleasure of meeting August a couple times, but right away was struck by his ability to motivate those around him. Some people just seem to have that ability to grab life by the horns and direct it where they want to go, taking those who are willing along for the ride. That was August. In fact, I think God must have given the entire Coppola family a sneak peek at the master plan, as everyone seems to have a wonderful grasp on their roles in that plan. While this is a time of mourning and sadness for your loss, it is also a wonderful time to celebrate the life August shared here on earth with us, and cherish the memories he has left with everyone he touched. Take comfort in knowing that he is still with you today, in a new found position to the right side of God in Heaven.

To August Coppola's Family:
I met August when he came to SF State as dean of Creative Arts in '88. I was the dean of the College of Extended Learning. We became warm colleagues, and he referred to me as his producer -- probably not an entirely complimentary term -- because of a number of ventures we undertook together. Some of our work involved time in San Francisco's North Beach, where one evening -- late -- we had the Deans' armwrestling championship in Tosca cafe for snifters of cognac. He won. There were memorable conversations at Tomasso's, Enrico's Cafe, and even Gino & Carlo. A vivid, complex and brilliant man. I am sorry he has left our world, and pleased that I shared some of his life. Purple Globes forever!

Dr. Coppola was my literature professor during my furst year in college (Cal State Long Beach 1965-1966). He was an inspiration to me and I am sure thousands of other college students. My regret is that I did not make a good enough effort to locate him and let him know how much I treasured the experience of being one of his students. I have written several poems and short stories (nothing published, yet) and everytime I put pen to paper, I remember him. I remember the time he took with me to pull out the creativity within me.

My deepest condolences to Lorrie Tennant and his family. We will remember you in our prayers. I will never forget this wonderful teacher.

October 31, 2009

I was working at Comair at the time and it was a Friday night when I first met August. Friday was supposed to be my day off, so I was anything but happy to be at work on a Friday night until I met August. I was called to push a wheelchair down to the aircraft, and so began my wonderful relationship with my "adopted father".

As I start pushing him down, I hear this man ask me," Do you know who I am?" I had no freaking idea, and I didn't even know the Coppola name at the time when he proudly stated, "I am August Coppola." We started talking about graduate school and by the end of the 10 minute walk we had exchanged numbers and emails.

For the first year, we communicated almost daily. I met the family at Easter, August came to meet my family, and he even sent me to San Francisco State. He wanted me to further my education and better myself. In every phone conversation and email, August was always educating me. From opera to literature, he encouraged me to listen and read things I had never heard of. I would spend hours on the phone with him and he would help me with my journey through life, meanwhile, calling me his "Papoose" and he was my "Pappy Auguste".

Throughout the years we kept in touch, but he moved to Newport Beach making the distance even greater. I thank Lorrie for the love and dedication she has given him, helping him these past years. My mom and I went to visit August and Lorrie a couple of years ago and I had seen him this past January, but I wish I could have seen him more frequently.

When I heard the news, I was devastated. I missed August due to the distance between us, now I will never get to see him again. I will never get to sit next to him again as he holds me and we talk for hours. He has been such a special person in my life and I can not say enough beautiful, amazing things to do him justice. I love him dearly and will miss him with all my heart. My condolences to Lorrie and the entire family, it saddens me every time I think of the void in my life without August in it. I will miss him dearly....

Dear Nicolas and Marc,
Anne just e-mailed me about the loss of your father.
We met when we were at one of our family gatherings at one of our son's house. I, too, had a nice long conversation with him (even had our pictures taken together). He was a very friendly person, and though I knew I would never see him again, it was a pleasure just knowing him.

He'll be kept in my prayers.

God bless you both and be thankful for the time you had with your father. Memories are all we have.

I am so sorry for your loss, I just found out as I am currently in Kuwait, returning from a year Afghanistan deployment.
My daughter Christy and myself Anne, met you at your father's house in Savannah several years ago at Easter.
Your father was a delight and a frustration. I spent many hours in the past few years in phone conversations with him. He was a very insightful man and it was a true pleasure knowing him.
He came to visit with us a few years ago and captivated my whole family.
I will miss him very much as I know you will. Please accept my condolences and prayers.
