August Hoffman Douglas, Jr., known to all as "Doug" (age 89), passed away after a long illness on December 19, 2017. He was born in New Orleans on December 18, 1928 to August H. Douglas and Edna Prudhomme Douglas, who preceded him in death. He married in 1957 and is survived by the love of his life Janice Keller Douglas. He is also survived by their three children, D. Stewart Douglas (Terry), Shawn Douglas Wall(Robert) and Stephen K. Douglas (Michelle); his grandchildren Kristin Keller Wall, Preston Douglas Wall, Stephen Keller Douglas, Jr., Christopher Dienes Douglas and Myles Makofsky Douglas, as well as his sisters, Edna Douglas Colton and Carol Douglas Elder (John). He attended and graduated from E.T. Merrick, Rugby Academy and Tulane University Engineering School, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. During the Korean Conflict he attended O.C.S. in the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, achieving a commission as Ensign and serving as a Commanding Officer of an 83' Patrol Boat on Active Duty., then transferring to the Active Reserve. He retired after 30 years of duty as a Captain (0-6). As a licensed engineer from Tulane University in 1949, and after his two years of active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard, he became active in construction related firms during his working career. These included Cabrice Mechanical Contractors, American Creosote Works, Inc., Binnings Construction Co., J.A. Jones Construction Company and Poole Construction, Ltd. Upon retiring from the construction industry he became a Commercial Real Estate Agent with Latter & Blum until his full retirement. Doug and his wife Janice enjoyed their many years together enjoying life, family and their many friends. As a proud graduate of Tulane University, he became active in various alumni activities and served as Board Vice-President for the Los Angeles Chapter (during his 5-year "career move" to California) and then later as President of the New Orleans Chapter. He subsequently became a member of the Board of the Emeritus Club, and also served as a member of the Board of the Military Order of Foreign Wars-New Orleans Chapter. Doug was a former member of the Essex Club, New Orleans Country Club and The Lakeshore Club, and until his death was an Honorary Life Member of his beloved Louisiana Club. He was also a member of several Carnival organizations. He was known to his many friends as someone quick with a laugh and a hearty handshake (both on and off the golf course), and he will be sorely missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to the Veterans of Foreign Wars at heroes.vfw.org or to the Veterans organization of your choice. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. held in the chapel at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in New Orleans. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will be private.
