Austen, I will greatly miss you my friend. We worked a lot together and became very very good friends. May god be with you!

Austen inspired so many young biologists who never met him, but heard about his extraordinary work. I know that many of my igem teammates, myself, and undoubtedly many others were (and still will be) inspired by him. My condolences to Austen's family and friends. Austen had a big positive impact on the world.

Such a sad loss. I hope that Austen's DNA sequence will be published and printed one day, and that his polymorphisms may live on through DNA editing.

I didn't know Austen except through three brief meetings in San Francisco, but he was an inspiration to me as a scientist. I was looking forward to seeing him again in November. He was a luminary.

Austen's visionary grasp of synthentic genomics was an instant inspiraration and his sense of humor, a giant exclamation mark. A great life lived quickly.
