Babette Marisa Protz, PhD

June 24, 1953 - March 2, 2023 Matthews, NC - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved mother, grandmother, friend, and inspiration to all who knew her. Dr. Babette Marisa Protz, PhD, age 69, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2023, surrounded by her family.

Babette was born to Edward and Alphonsine Protz on June 24, 1953, in Kittanning, PA. From a young age, she showed a keen intellect and a sharp sense of humor that would endear her to all she met. She worked hard throughout her life, determined to provide the best possible life for her family.

Babette was a pillar of strength and support for her children, always there to lend an ear or offer a word of encouragement. She instilled in her children a sense of self-reliance and determination that would serve them well throughout their lives.

As a single mother, Babette was dedicated to earning a university degree. She obtained her B.S. in Criminal Justice in 1998 but didn't stop there. Babette earned a M.A. in Teaching in 2004, a M.S. in Criminal Justice in 2005, and her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 2013.

Dr. Protz was an Instructor of Criminal Justice & Criminology and Associate Degree Assessment Coordinator for the University of South Carolina at Lancaster. She brought a love of learning, an appreciation for beyond-the-classroom experiences, and a smile to so many faces over the years. Her students loved her enthusiasm and her wit.

Babette is survived by her children Morgan Sykes (Justin), Coleton Tillett, Burke Tipps (Anna), and Cody Tipps, and her grandchildren, Peyton Sykes and Collin Sykes. She will be remembered fondly by all who knew her, and her legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched.
