Dear Kamla,
We received your letter of the 18th Aug, 2016 conveying dear Balbir`s passing away on the 12th of July, only yesterday.
It is shocking news for us as we knew him since 1959 and went about like a family, sharing jokes, travels and ate together. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers to God to grant peace to the departed soul and give you, Sanjeev and Vanita strength to bear this terrible loss.
There are not many friends left now whom we knew, except Sudarshan Bhatia and Uma ji. We conveyed the new to them yesterday. Last we sent an e-mail to Balbir was when Om passed away. We hope the e-mail addresses are OK (Please acknowledge. Bintoo sometimes goes to S.Fo.). We tried to ring you up but failed perhaps as the numbers were old.
One day or the other death comes to all of us on the day of His choosing. We have to have courage to continue till such time.
You all will always be in our thoughts. With love to Sanjeev and Vanita.

My dear Sanjeev,
I got the tragic news of uncles death from Sunita via her email.
He was a man who I really liked and admired because he was a person who was high on achievements all round and equally high in humility as also generosity.
Your parents were probably the closest friends of my parents being with them in all their life's trials. Even after their death your parents never abandoned us -such was their generosity.
Please convey my heart felt sorrow and condolences to Kamla aunty and Vanita as well.

Dear Kamla, Vanita and Sonny
It was thoughtful of you to let us know of Balbir's passing. We recall fondly our warm friendship during the time that we shared together in Baghdad in the 1980s. We have valued the faithful contact that we have maintained over all the years since. It is a pity that our lives never permitted us to meet up again during the happy years of our retirements. We have not visited the United States for the past 25 years or so. And we don't think that Kamla and Balbir ever came to New Zealand. Our travel in recent years has been largely in Asia, apart from an annual visit to Australia to visit one of our families.
We were saddened to learn that Balbir is no longer with us. He had an outstanding career of which the whole family can be proud. Even more importantly, we know how much he valued and loved his family.
Please accept our sincere sympathy and convey our warmest greetings to dear Kamla.
Sincerely
Joan and Barry Brooks

Dear Kamla Aunty, Sanjeev and Vanita,
We are very, very sad to hear about Uncle's passing as he was one of a kind. I did want to leave a picture of the good times Uncle and my Dad had in their younger days. I remember him fondly from the days in Bombay when he was posted in Pune. The jokes cracked between my Dad and him were constant all through their lives and even transitioned to emails when the physical distance and age became more difficult to see each other.
He will definitely be missed by all and we pray for his soul

My father-in-law was the textbook definition of a true gentleman, always a kind and cheerful soul who truly valued our visits to him over the years and made us feel happy whenever we were around him. He lived life to its fullest, always enjoying every moment and living by example, setting a wonderful example for his son and grandsons, and he will truly be missed. We all loved him very much and will always remember him fondly with the happiest of memories.

Dear Aunty, Vanita, Ishan, Aneesha, and Family,
So sorry that Uncle is no longer with us. Please accept our condolences.
Although, we all knew of Uncle's condition, we cannot imagine;
- how you are grieving through this difficult time.
- that our phone will not convey his sweet voice wishing us on our special days (he and Aunty always called us to wish and bless us).
- that he will not share stories and cherish us with his beautiful smile.
We have several memories that will ALWAYS stay with us. His jokes and wonderful humor will be missed.
Uncle epitomized strength -- he never gave up, fought with a "can do" attitude, and good spirit. He was so dignified and supported all that modern medicine had to offer. So thoughtful of Uncle to donate his blood for future research that will benefit others like him who are experiencing his condition. So appropriate of you requesting people to donate to Caring Community Foundation, in lieu of flowers -- Uncle would appreciate that thought.
Uncle's amicable and inclusive nature touched everyone, regardless of age, status, or country they were from.
We salute Uncle for all that he represented, and how he led his life with dignity.
Sorry that we were not able to attend service for Uncle since we were out of town until Sunday. Thinking of you all.
With love and respect -- Ash, Leena, and Kurren

Balbir Singh Bhagowalia was my grandpa, and my brother and I called him Mipa. Mipa, we are going to miss you so much. You were such a kind and genuine man and my brother and I are so proud to call you our grandpa.
We had so many great memories together that I will always cherish. Something simple he used to say that I found so funny was how he said, "Hi beta" in the certain voice he used to say it in. He also had an awesome laugh that could make anybody feel better, and his overall personality had the same great effect on the people he knew. You were such an incredible man and I know that you are watching over us.
We love you, Mipa.

Dear Kamla Aunty, Sanjeev and Vanita,
It is with a very heavy heart that I was unable to attend the services this weekend in North Carolina. I'm sorry I was unable to be there to celebrate the life of a truly great man!
Uncle Balbir was very special to me. He was a true role model for me during a very difficult period in my life. In Uncle Balbir I saw a man who was honest, hard working and a true class act. Most importantly I saw a man who loved his wife and family unconditionally. He was a true inspiration to me during my formative years.
I know at this time there are no words that can help heal the pain you are feeling. But please know the world was a much better place because of Mr. Balbir Singh Bhagowalia.

I am really sorry to hear about uncle, may God rest his soul in peace and give you and your family the strength to bear this sadness. Do remember that you were blessed to have him here, so close by and to continue to be there for him and your mom, every step of the way. My dear Sanjeev/Kammo
I don't know how to write this sad email never thought I will have to do this. We (Rajji) had such beautiful relations with him. Rajji and Balbir were very close to each other in many ways. They used to talk and crack jokes, laugh and laugh it was fun to watch them, all that is gone forever. May God rest their souls in peace.
Kammo, you are so talented, you write so beautifully keep doing that may be one day we will read an interesting novel written by you. Lots of love

Dear Mipa,
We are devastated by this loss. Words cannot express how much you meant to us and how much you taught us throughout our lives through your class, generosity, respectability, and truly kind-hearted soul. Your positive outlook on life would brighten up our days no matter what we were going through and it brightened the hearts of everyone who came across you. Even when faced with a battle with cancer, you never wavered, which speaks even more to your strength and character than we can describe. You were the epitome of a great role model and one without whom we would not be the people we are today. We miss you so much but know that you are in a better place and can look down at us beside God's warm embrace. We will never forget all the lessons you taught us and will forever cherish all of the memories we made with you.
We love you, Mipa.

Uncle Balbir's spirit and warmth will endure in our hearts forever he was inspiring, resilient, kind, thoughtful, always cheerful, and with a delightful sense of humor that sparked laughter in everyone. I recall many pleasant conversations with him; he was always interested in everyone's well-being.
My mother, Mukta, his sister-in-law, just adored him. He was patient, ready to lend a hand, alleviating her myriad frustrations with paperwork and life's daily struggles, even as he fought his illness with such grace. My mother was very close to Aunty Kamla and Uncle Balbir, speaking to them almost every day, their conversations ranging from gentle teasing to selfless support. They were dear to her heart, till her last day on this earth, and I am sure in her afterlife. Uncle Balbir was gentle, yet enjoyed good banter, intellectual, and always encouraging. We will miss his physical presence and his joyful voice, but his loving memory will reside in our hearts forever.
With love and prayers for eternal peace for his soul!
Take care of Aunty and yourself and hope to see you soon!

Sonny,
I am so very sorry to hear of the death of your father. While I never met him, it is clear from the kind of son you are, that he must have been quite noble, strong of character, with high integrity, intelligent, caring, and yet with a sense of humor and humble. So, if the measure of your father is the son, your father will not be long forgotten by anyone who has the pleasure of your company. Take care in your time of grief. I pray for God's blessing on your and your extended family.

Balbir Uncle has been blessed with a loving family and having lived a full life, having lived in 4 continents. Now Blabir Uncle has now made his final journey to Heaven.

Bhagwad Gita: The One who leaves the body, at the hour of death, remembering Me attains My abode. There is no doubt about this. (BG 8:05).

Everyone that Dad touched came away with gifts that he imparted. Effortlessly he conveyed kindness, gentleness, and an unmistakable positive outlook. I believe we can measure the depth of a man by the feeling you have when you are with him and that remains with you after you part. Dad left us many of these treasures. I will share three here today.
The first is his Positive Outlook:
As you have already seen in these photos and personally experienced, he greeted us with his disarming smile, no matter what he was personally going through. His encyclopedic recall and timing for a joke for any conversation was just another way he could fill a room with joy and laughter.
His personal life view was his driving force that imparted optimism and cheer. I imagine that this was shaped not only from what he read and learned from the news but his own vast and deep personal cultural experience. It would take some prodding to get him to talk about his own vast accomplishments, but the gems that he would share gave us insight into a true renaissance man. He imparted his perspectives with a beautiful kindness, grace and dignity.
The second is his Passion for life and his grit:
Mom and Dad lived all over the world at one time we counted almost 3 dozen different countries Dad had visited, worked or lived. But beyond his vast travels he lived his everyday life with enthusiasm and awe the way he would recant a golf shot he had seen or a buzzer-beating Duke win over UNC, he conveyed a sincere passion for whatever experience he was sharing. His grit was evident in so many small and large ways from a repairing a hopeless home appliance or building some contraption to keep the squirrels away from the bird feeder to battling cancer with every ounce of energy so he could stay with Mom and us just a little longer.
The third is his Devotion and sacrifice:
One measure of success for a father is what your children have become. Dad was so proud of his grandchildren Aneesha, Rajeev and Sanjay already so accomplished in their early academic achievements, his son Sanjeev accomplished and successful career at senior levels of state and federal government. But Dad could not have been more profoundly awed of what he saw in his daughter Vanita. Just as he devoted and made sacrifices in raising his family, Vanita devoted her life for the past several years in physically carrying and emotionally uplifting Dad thru the weekly treatments, testing and checkups. Dad said to us that he could not have done this without you Vanita, and because of you he was able to stay with us for a significantly extended period of time.
I will close by adding that Dad was a gentleman in all senses of the word. He came from from a mold that was characterized by dignity, principle, integrity and elegant simplicity. As mom just the other day told me what Dad most wanted - was to do good for others. And if he could ask for anything it would be for us to do the same.

I am blessed to have had such a close relationship with my Nanafull of love, respect, and mutual affection. Not a day went by when one of us wouldn't be boasting about the other. Nana would tell nurses and anyone who would hear, Did I tell you my granddaughter got a hole-in-one? or I would somehow wedge into conversation that my Nana had lived in and visited over 30 foreign countries.
We loved each other so much and held each other in the highest regard. Even when I made a bad shot on the golf course during one of our many Lakeshore rounds, Nana would just say, Wow! Great Shot! and have the biggest smile on his face. Even when I felt dejected during college and law school admissions, Nana was the one who instilled confidence in me to keep persevering and take advantage of every opportunity because I was limitless in what I could accomplish. Nana was my cheerleader and confidant, but most importantly he was the most amazing friend.
I'm going to miss you NanaCalling you after studying or working and telling you how I was so frustrated with the material I was learning in class or how excited I was when I got good feedback on an assignment or grade. I'm going to miss our conversations and time spent together with you guiding me along.
Your amazing positive spirit has affected all who knew you and I will find strength and confidence from your love and the love you gave to all who surround us.
I am so blessed to call you my Nana.
