Barbara Allen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 30, 2025.
Barbara Lael Allen, 100, passed away peacefully at her home in Monte Sereno, California on February 27, 2025.

Born on June 1, 1924 in Oak Park, Illinois, Barbara lived a life marked by good health, happiness, and a wide circle of good friends and family. She earned her nursing degree from the School of Nursing of Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago in October of 1945. Barbara married Robert (Bob) Allen, the brother of a classmate and childhood friend, on March 12, 1945. Together they had three children, Steven, Susan, and Janice. After raising her children, she returned to her nursing career as the director of nursing at a local psychiatric care facility.

Throughout their lives, Bob and Barbara traveled throughout America, Europe, and Asia. After Bob's death in 1986, Barbara continued exploring Europe and Australia, traveling well into her 90's. Small in stature but mighty in spirit, she was strong, independent, and always ready for a new adventure.

In addition to her deep love for travel, Barbara was an adamant supporter of the arts: museums, the symphony, and ballet. She loved flowers and enjoyed gardening-interests that reflected her appreciation for beauty and discovery. She was a lifelong voracious reader. Whether for learning or pleasure, she was never without a book at her side and could converse on any topic presented to her. Barbara loved children and enjoyed many hours as a volunteer helping children and as a grandmother providing guidance, love, and comfort.

Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert J. Allen. She is survived by her children; Steve, Sue and her husband Mike; and Janice and her husband Shane. She also leaves behind her cherished granddaughters: Marissa and her husband Brad; Becca; and Brina.

A graveside service for immediate family will be held on March 14, 2025 at Los Gatos Memorial Park, followed by a Celebration of Life with friends and loved ones.

Whether exploring new places, reading a book, or tending to her flowers, she embraced life with enthusiasm and grace. Barbara's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her, as they continue to be inspired by her kindness, strength, and adventurous spirit. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the children's library of your choice.
