Barbara Charlton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 14, 2025.
The family of Barbara Huffman Charlton, of New Castle, VA, is saddened to announce her passing on December 13, at the age of 80.

Born on August 24, 1945, Barbara was the second child of Eugene Huffman and Lucille Cox Huffman.

In 1964, Barbara married Patrick King Charlton, of Oriskany, Va. She graduated from Radford College in 1967, with a degree in Education. She began her teaching career in Pulaski. Barbara moved to Covington and continued teaching in the Covington City School System for 32 years. She taught first grade, then second grade. During Barbara's career she returned to college where she earned a Masters degree in Education and Psychology.

Upon retirement in 2000, Barbara and Pat returned to her beloved Craig County. Barbara loved gardening and sharing fresh vegetables with friends and family. She was a member of the Maywood Garden Club, as well as Dreama's Readers book club. Always active, Barbara enjoyed water aerobics and daily walks with friends. Traveling with Pat, her daughter Jody, and son-in-law Dan provided lots of laughs and wonderful memories.

A very important part of Barbara's life was her sister Judy. Their bond was unmatched. They spoke almost daily and supported each other through the good and bad times.

They spent the holidays together where they told "sister" stories about growing up. Their banter entertained family and friends and always ended with lots of laughter.

Barbara was an active member of United Bethel Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school for several years. The church played an important role in her life and was a source of comfort and community.

As Barbara began to need assistance with her daily routines she was blessed with two wonderful caregivers. Mary Williams and Brenna Rose became invaluable, and Barbara cherished her time with them. Barbara's family is forever grateful for their kindness and compassion.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Lucille. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Pat; one daughter, Jody Soroka (Dan); one sister, Judy Price (Danny-deceased); sister-in-law, Betty Charlton (Don-deceased); several nieces and nephews, Danny Price (Cricket), Tammy Price, Susan Wirt (Allen), Angela Charlton (Andrew Reczkowski-deceased), Mark Flippo (Deborah); great-nieces and nephews, Logan Murphy (Joel), Tanner Price, Matthew Wirt, Ryan Wirt (Brittany Jones), Victoria Reczkowski (Grace Grubb), and Elizabeth Reczkowski; cousins, Shari Tripp (Robert), Ashlei Barham (Justin), & Bertie Ann Henderson.

Sincere thanks to Roanoke Memorial I.C.U. nurses, Allison and Matilda.

Funeral Services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, December 19, 2025, at Bethel United Methodist Church with Rev. Emory Tarpley officiating. Interment will follow at Ross Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Thursday, December 18 at Bethel United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church or the Simmonsville Volunteer Fire Dept.
