Barbara Cushing Obituary

Published by Santa Cruz Sentinel on Jun. 4, 2022.
Barbara Cushing
April 4, 1950 - May 16, 2022
Santa Cruz
If there is one word that sums up the life of Barbara, it would be adventuress. She traveled the world, visiting 27 countries and 5 continents. Some of her most memorable adventures were the 4! African safaris, hiking to Base Camp below Mt. Everest (18,250' +), Birding in Brazil. Barbara was an avid outdoorswoman: backpacker, rock climber, skier, cyclist, white water rafter, kayaker, canoer, birder. She never failed to take some of the most beautiful photographs of the places, people and animals she saw.
When not out in nature and traveling, she was making an impact as a School Counselor in Scotts Valley and Santa Cruz schools, Hartnell College, San Jose State University, Human Resource Agency (SC County), and McDowell Youth Homes (Soquel), to list a few of her contributions to the well-being of others. She adored working with the Elementary age group.
Barbara was born in Hartford, CT but lived in Santa Clara and Santa Cruz since 1960, making her a near CA native. She received degrees from several colleges and universities: Foreign de Letras, University of Madrid, Spain (1968), A.A. Psychology, West Valley College, Saratoga (1972), B.A. Psychology, UC Santa Cruz (1976), and M.S.W., CSU, Fresno (1983).
Barbara was pre-deceased by her loving partner and wife of over 30 years, Betty Lynn Steinmetz. She is survived by her two sisters and two brothers, cousins, nieces, nephews, and some of the most loving, supportive and understanding friends in the Santa Cruz community.
She left all of us too soon but also with many memories of her sparkling eyes, ready smile, hearty laugh, comical jokes and compassionate soul.
Contributions may be made to Pogonip Open Space, Santa Cruz or ALS Foundation.

I am so grateful for the short time Barbara entered my life. She made such a deep and tender impression on my heart. She is my role model for heart-centered living, independence balanced with kindness, connection and deep reverence for the essence of all living things. It was her gift of the book "When Things Fall Apart" by Pema Chödrön that broke through a resistance barrier and opened up a healing portal to more peace and acceptance without the need to know or understand "why." God Bless this remarkable human being and eternal kindness and compassion for all those she touched in her mortal life and who mourn her loss in their lives today.
