Im sorry that aI never met Captain Harmer. I only stumbled across her tonight and I am touched by her story. What a lady and a pilot. Sometimes you just read something and it strikes a chord. You feel a connection.
I wish I cold have met her or maybe crossed paths in some layover city. I hope now that rests in peace. God must have needed a really good Concorde captain.

Dear Barbara, been thinking of you all week. In fact not a day goes by when you do not enter my mind. We all still miss you so much, your kindness, words of wisdom and 'light' that still shines so bright. Your heritage blue plaque is a firm Felpham fixture, a reminder of your great achievements and inspiration to others. My dear hope is that my Mum, your big sister Jeanne, is with you now. Sadly departed our world on 3rd November 2023. It brings me comfort to know that you are together again. All my love always, Jeanne (your niece). xx

I always wanted to follow in my father's footsteps as a pilot, but, for one reason or another, getting chucked out of grammar school wasn't 'conducive'... and I settled for a career as cabin crew.
Meeting Barbara for the first time, however..and learning about such fortitude in 'wanting it and going for it' really brought it home to me what I could have done with that same attitude.
A remarkable, lovely and inspirational woman...and I'll remember her always.

I have only just found this book to sign, but a memory is a memory...
I recall flying with Barbara on the 777 from Lgw when I was cabin crew... I remember feeling a little nervous of flying with her... but how wrong could I have been... she made me feel completely at ease bring such a lovely lady... we had a great trip and I felt super proud to be part of her "all female" crew too on more than one occasion... Happy memories indeed...
Thank you Barbara... Fly high xx

Dear Barbara,
Another year has passed and the pain of your loss is still there every day. At a sad time when we have lost another inspiring, incredible woman, I still look to you as one of the most inspirational people in my life. There was just something about you that everyone loved, your resolve, determination, nothing phased you. From an early age, you were like a second Mum to me, I remember fondly you taking me to Wales in your green Triumph Spitfire to visit your father, my grandfather. You said “we are going to climb a mountain”, I remember a feeling of fear as you took my hand and told me I could do it. It was a mountain opposite my grandfather’s home and as we climbed and navigated the steep, dark grey rocks you kept me positive, motivated, looking forward and told me that I could do it. Even though I was only 10 years old (and the year of the Queen’s silver Jubilee) it was a moment I will never forget. Barbara, you gave me strength, inspiration and told me that we can all climb mountains. Now all these years on I realize this was a metaphor that I took with me throughout my life, as you did through yours. What you achieved in your short life was remarkable, with no degree, no family wealth, you set yourself goals and sacrificed much to drive yourself forward and find a way to realize your dream. Along the way you were kind, loving, charismatic and always giving of your time and wisdom, even though you were asked a million times “what’s it like being the first female Concorde pilot”- you always stopped and told your story willingly and graciously, so much so that I was proud to suggest to you that you become a motivational speaker. I managed your speaking engagements for a few years until your retirement and when you eventually sadly fell ill with Cancer. You spoke to many all over the world telling of your unique journey from mobile hairdresser to Concorde pilot, inspiring many with photos, video and anecdotes. I was proud to give back the help and support that you always gave to me and show people the Barbara Harmer we knew and loved and hopefully inspire others to 'climb their own mountains’.
I wish you could see the historic blue plaque on the home that you shared in Loughton in your early years with sisters Jeanne (my Mum), Joyce and Carole and your mother and father Doris and Richard. Even though your life was sadly cut short at only 57 years old, it is remarkable what you achieved, I know there would have been many more goals met if you had lived longer.
Before you passed you asked me to deliver a personal message to every woman I knew and spread the word. A simple blood test that could have saved your life and many others, a request specifically to your doctor and called CA125 which will detect and monitor early any cancer cells present. With Ovarian Cancer, unfortunately once you get symptoms it is usually too late, this blood test can detect right at the outset and therefore early treatment could ensure a full recovery. I still pass this onto everyone and champion it to be part of every well-woman annual check-up. Hopefully, if everyone does the same, then this will become part of everyday life, saving millions of women.
Barbara, I think of you on what would have been your 69th Birthday, missing you always and your shining light of love and inspiration.
Your ever-loving niece,
Jeanne xxx

We had both led busy lives and I looked forward to the day when we were both retired and could spend more time together as sisters, but that was not to be. All I have are memories of the times, the precious enjoyable times we spent together throughout our lives. Some are very memorable indeed. You loved to surprise people and loved surprises. I shall remember the special times, and those surprises, that we shared in our lives.
These happy memories I shall treasure forever. I love and miss you Barbara.

Have only just found out about the passing of Barbara. I met her on my Air Traffic Control Assistant course in the 70's. My everlasting memory will be the lady hairdresser from Bognor Regis arriving at Hurn Airport in her Ford Anglia .
We became friends and stayed in touch when she went to Gatwick and I went to West Drayton . She stayed with us in Chiswick when I met my wife Mal and she came to our home in Bracknell when my daughter Rebecca was born.
We bumped into each other now and again at Heathrow when I worked for the BAA and she flew for Genair but over the years we lost touch but followed her career and knew she had flown Concorde.
The spirit and determination to be the best is an inspiration to us all.
We are very sad that we could not pay our respects at her funeral but are very proud to have known her and will remember her with fondness. Our thoughts and best wishes go to her partner Andy and her family.

My colleague Ian told me about this fantastic memorial to Barbara's memory.
Her beaming smile, her true dedication, a naughty sense of humour set Barbara aside from the rest. Her determination to reach for the sky is inspirational.
I still remember, the day after she had passed, (many of us had no idea she was so ill), walking into CRC at Terminal 5 for my service to Kenya, and a skipper stopped me and told me the news. I thought my heart was going to burst.
Unlike Ian, I did have the most amazing fortune to share a flight deck with Captain Harmer - and she was one of the best. I can still hear her words of wisdom to me - another self improver who made it to the blue and white of the Speedbirds.
From all of us Barbara, who still wear the blue and silver uniform you so proudly wore yourself - we miss you, and wherever you are, I'll be looking for you above those clouds on the world's air routes.
Never forgotten.

I learned of the untimely passing of Barbara back in March at the BA Crew Reporting Centre at Terminal 5 when I returned from holiday.
The sense of shock from her former colleagues is still present today. Barbara will be remembered for her sense of humour, dedication and compassion.
I never had the pleasure of sharing a flightdeck with her, but chatted with her on numerous occasions and I will always remember her beaming smile and wonderful sense of fun.
In the next few days, when I take my Speedbird Boeing 777 into the skies, I'll look for her contrails over the Atlantic, where I am sure her heart remains along with memories of the Speedbird Concordes.
Happy Landings Barbara, and may you soar on your wings wherever you are now.

I was so sad to hear of Barbara's passing on Radio 4 today. As a flying Instructor at Goodwood Flying School in 1981 Barbara was the first person to risk teaching me to fly and she was sorely tried by my early attempts at regaining terra firma.
Commitment and perseverance were evident qualities and anyone who met her knew that she would achieve her objectives, with a wry smile and a laugh.
I was proud to have met her and share a brief moment in time.

I knew Barbara when she was a young hairdresser. She visited my home in Middleton, and I became very fond of her. She and my son fell in love and moved in to a flat in Bognor, where they spent a very happy time together. Sadly! they parted, and i was so very sorry, as she was someone I admired. She was a happy , honerable, and altogether a pleasure to know and spend time with.
I did think that she was destined for greater things than hairdressing, but her achievements surpassed anything that I could have imagined.
I wish that I had known that she had moved to Felpham. I would so have loved to meet her again.
I look back to the happy times we spent together. Little did we know that both she and my Son would pass away in St. Wilfred's Hospice
Rest in peace Barbara.
Love Jean.

My dearest Aunty Barbara (or Aunty Babs as I used to call you - although I know you weren't too keen on that!). Words cannot explain how sad it is that we've lost you. It is clear from the many messages that you were much loved and a true inspiration - one thing is for sure, that will live on. Unfortunately I moved away from the Chichester area some years ago so opportunities to catch up with you were few and far between in recent times - however I will always treasure the many wonderful memories of the times we did spend together. I am truly honoured that you were a part of my family and will miss you tremendously. God bless.

Quite by accident, today I learned of Barbara's death. Ironically perhaps it resulted from me visiting Croydon Airport and having lunch. I looked at various photos and the plane hanging outside in Morton Air Services colours. Upon coming home I looked up Morton on the web and discovered another female pilot had flown with them called Yvonne Sintes, I had met her years before as Yvonne Pope.
I then thought, I wonder what I'll find on Barbara Harmer. I knew she was the first and only female Concorde Pilot, I knew this from years ago, in fact there is a photo of her inside the Concorde at Brooklands Museum and I saw this last year.
I met Barbara in September 1974. Along with three other girls, I was on the intake for Air Traffic Control Assistants at Gatwick. I was Just 19 and she was a year older. We spent probably 2/3 days perhaps on an inaugural course at Gatwick, and then went down to Hurn Airport in Hampshire for an intensive 4 week course before being allocated watches at Gatwick. I was on A watch and Barbara was on C watch. I knew then that she had an intense interest in flying. I went on to train as an aerodrome controller and left Gatwick in 1977. I didn't remain in aviation, but its always been a life long interest and passion.
I became aware that Barbara had become a Concorde pilot, back in the 1990s.
Only today did I read about her ambitions from hairdresser to Concorde Captain, she had studied for A levels, etc.... her after dinner speaking....what a tremendous woman, what a tremendous inspiration to us all!
She will be missed by many, loved by many.
It was indeed a pleasure to have met her back in those distant but heady days of the 1970s.
She must be due for a biography, indeed a film, I cannot say enough about such an inspiring woman!
It is sad, but it has been a pleasure to have known her if only fleetingly.

On the 30th May 1978,after the morning shift at Gatwick ATC, Barbara asked if she could come with me on a flight I was making that afternoon, from Shoreham to Headcorn and back in a Cessna 150. Her first flight, I believe. On landing back at KA she was so full of enthusiasm .
