Barbara Horn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 19, 2023.
Barbara Ann Edmondson Horn, Flamboyant Matriarch Dies at 87.

Atlanta native and our flamboyant mother, Barbara Ann Edmondson Horn, sadly passed away on July 14 at the age of 87. She was an inspiring mother who was always there to guide her friends, siblings, children and grandchildren on the best how-to live and generate a higher level of creativity with work, love, children, and beauty. She had a very close large family along with many friends from Atlanta and Chicago. Her marriage to Sidney Horn, a World War II Bronze Star and Purple Heart veteran in 1958 lasted until his death in 1997. She was a well-loved member of the Atlanta community, from her days in sales at Citizen's Jewelry Atlanta in the late 1960's and 70s, where she guided newlyweds, wives, husbands and the burgeoning business community on the best fine jewelry pieces for gifts and legacy investments. From there she started her own estate jewelry broker business, serving not just regular people and divorcees, but Atlantans from former Miss America's to Public Company magnates that were always looking to divest or upgrade with a highly trusted and discreet source. Prior to her work in Atlanta, in suburban Chicago during the 1960s, she wrote theater blurbs for the Niles Bugle, an activity that gave her a reporter's access to talent in many off-Broadway productions, namely Jon Voight, Charlton Heston and Robert Duvall-whom she befriended with a meet cute moment of having the same name as his ex-wife. Barbara, with her outgoing personality, five-foot nine glamorous stature could not help but stand out in her late 20s then, with her super-model presence, often punctuated with her self-designed and hand sewn fashion designs. Remarkably her, black velvet dolman sleeved off-shoulder sheath cocktail dress, today stands up to the surprise of many fashionistas. Recent yearbook history found her photographed at Russell High School in Atlanta's East Point over- participating in clubs including, Art, Library, Yearbook, Hi-Y, Chorus, Theater, and Spanish.

She was predeceased, as mentioned by her husband Sidney Horn, and is survived by her significant partner Edward Murphy; siblings Earl Edmondson, James Edmondson, Brenda Short and Ellen Watkins; her children, Victoria Brannon, Alicia Horn Booth, and Leslie Horn; grandchildren, Maya Gebus-Mockabee, Jordan and Alexander Showe; great grandchildren Ciaran and Nenagh Gebus-Mockabee, and Ava, Sebastian and Jalyn Showe; along with Paul Gebus-Mockabee and Stephanie Showe.

To honor Barbara Horn's memory, the family is holding a private celebration of her life later in September. For those who knew her and remember her wonderful life, and the personal gifts she gave stealthily to those in need, please share your memories with Victoria Brannon at [email protected].

When my daughter was first introduced to Barbara, I asked her what she thought of my future Mother-In-Law. "She's a character," Taylor said. I couldn't wrap up Barbara's life better than that.
