BARBARA HOROWITZ Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 8, 2011.
HOROWITZ--Barbara. Dean David M. Schizer and the entire Columbia Law School community are greatly saddened by the loss of Barbara Silver Horowitz, who was, along with her husband, Gedale B. Horowitz '55, a devoted champion of the Law School and Columbia University. Throughout her life, Barbara had an unstinting devotion to educational excellence. She was intimately connected to the alumni affairs of Barnard College from the time she graduated in 1955, and generously endowed a chair for the director of education at Barnard and established its Centennial Scholars program. For many years Barbara and Dale have also extended their counsel, generosity, and friendship to the Law School, where Dale has served on the Steering Committee for the Board of Visitors, and his class reunion committee. Last year, they received Columbia University Alumni Medals for Distinguished Service from the Columbia Alumni Association. Barbara was an inspiration to many for conveying her passion for Columbia with both humility and grace. Our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to Dale, son Seth '89, daughter Ruth Horowitz Nachman, and their families.

Gedale, So very sorry to have read about the loss of your beloved wife Barbara. May the support and caring of those who keep you close bring you comfort and peace at this most difficult time.

Miss the days when you would come out to San Francisco. Time is just flying by now.

With deepest sympathy,

Peter Morgan

I met Barbara while participating on the Acquisition Committee for tJm; she was a lovely, gracious woman, very friendly and warm, and I am so sorry to hear this tragic news. I certainly will miss her as I am new in the community, living out of town most of the time, so a friendly face and conversation were always welcome! God bless her and keep her memory for a blessing. May the family find peace and love at this time.

Sincerely,

We send our heartfelt condolences to all the family. As Andrea said to me last night, "Mom, I can't believe this. She was so young, so vivacious, so alive." We treasure the all family times together with her over the years, especially the Passovers at the Concord. And I love remembering our special days together at the NY Philharmonic Rehearsals and lunches.
