Barbara Kaplan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 23, 2007.
WEST BARNSTABLE - Barbara Whitmore Kaplan, 63, died peacefully with family and friends by her side on Friday, Sept. 21, 2007.

A year-long battle with Leiomyosarcoma did not dim her positive spirit.

Born in Omaha, Neb., Barbara graduated from Cathedral High School and University of Nebraska at Omaha with a degree in interior design.

She spent her early professional years as a medical assistant in Trumbull, Conn., and later as a regional sales representative for the furniture company Knoll International.

In her 50s, her sense of adventure led her to live in Honduras and later on the island of Roatan where she taught scuba diving.

She moved to Cape Cod in 1999 to be closer to family.

Barbara loved the outdoors - summers were spent swimming, sailing and golfing; autumn brought cycling and kayaking; winters meant skiing in Killington, Vt.

She was an active member of the Cape Cod Ski Club.

Barbara's mantra was ''another mile, another run, a few more holes.”

Known as 'Oma' to her grandchildren, life's best adventures were had while holding small hands.

A dedicated reader of Bon Appetit magazine, she nourished many not only with her meals, but also her warmth and hospitality.

She is survived by her husband, Walter R. Kaplan of West Barnstable; her son Dr. John Willis, wife Julie; and grandchildren Kylin, Jack and Ava; her brothers Jim and Tom of Omaha and Bob of Indianapolis; and many nieces and nephews.

She also leaves stepchildren, Brad Kaplan and wife Lorna with baby Iona and Tara and Sergio Marini with children Chiara and Allegra.

Barbara was predeceased by her beloved parents Anne and Don Whitmore and sister Mary Fox.

A memorial service will be held in the John-Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Road (Route 28) Marstons Mills, on Monday Sept. 24, at 1:30 p.m.

Memorials in her name may be made to the Jimmy Fund c/o Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place, Sixth floor, Brookline, MA 02445-7226 or Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 765 Attucks Way, Hyannis, MA 02601.

BARB TAUGHT ME HOW TO SCUBA, SKI DOWN MOGELS, TAKE LONG BICYLE RIDES, AND THAT IT WAS OK TO EAT PASTA WITH FISH, BUT MOST OF ALL HOW TO ENJOY LIFE...SHE WAS THE STRONGEST AND THE MOST EXCITING WOMAN I WILL EVER MEET. I LOVED HER AND HER FAMILY VERY MUCH. SHE WILL BE TRULY MISSED.

Johnny,
Your Mom has been and will always be part of our family. I don't remember much before I was 4. I do remember crying like a baby when she drove off to move to Connecticut from Omaha in that 1965 Mustang. Her physical beauty was incomparable and only surpassed by the beauty of her being. She left the world a better place and we are all better people because of Barbara.

I worked with Barb in Omaha in the furniture business. I have wonderful memories of her competitiveness and spirit. She never ever gave up and inspired those around her. She truly lived life to the fullest. She lovingly talked about her son and her grandchildren. I will always remember her spirit! My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Barb was the glamorous, worldly, older sister I always wished I had. I so enjoyed hearing of her adventures through her sister, Mary. While the rest of us were tethered to Omaha, the world was Barb's oyster.
One of the best memories of Barb is the lovely birthday confection we lovingly created for her one year when she was living in Omaha...It was impressively beautiful...then she cut into it...and found-toilet paper!!!
That was the best laughter and I will remember her that way, always.
My condolences to her family, the people who lived with her every day who will miss her dearly. The way she lived is an inspiration.

Barb was an amazing woman! I am shocked and saddened to learn of her death. She was classy, adventurous and generous. My family has always thought the world of her! Barb, My Mom and I used to do the women's triathlon together with her on Lake Candlewood. Barb moved away, but My Mom (Lynne Goracke Houtz) and I have continued the triathlon tradition. I think of Barb whenever we do it. Rest in peace, Barb.
