Barbara Elaine Kaser

BREWSTER — Barbara Elaine Kaser passed away on April 21, 2009, after a courageous battle with a short illness. She was 77 years old.

She was born in Newark, N.J., on March 24, 1932, and was a graduate of Bloomfield High School in New Jersey. She moved to the Cape in 1964. Dedicated to her family and friends, she was actively involved in her children's activities, including Little League, Brewster swimming, and serving as a Cub Scout den mother. In addition, she and her husband Gary helped welcome the first visit of the Marine Drum and Bugle Corp. to Orleans in the early 1980s.

She was the beloved wife of the late Gary James Kaser for 39 years. Together they raised three sons, Gary James Kaser Jr. and William G. Kaser, both of Brewster, and Steven Kaser of Orleans. In addition to her three sons, she is survived by three grandsons; a granddaughter; a brother, LeRoy Smith of Oakland, Calif.; a nephew, Eric Smith of California; and multiple cousins.

The family operated the Cleaver Restaurant in Orleans from 1973 until its closing in 1995. After retiring from the restaurant business, Barbara worked at many local bed-and-breakfasts. Her true passion was helping others in need and she worked right up until her time of illness, caring for the elderly through the Council on Aging in Brewster.

Barbara was also an avid gardener and animal lover, and greatly enjoyed the outdoors.

A celebration of Barbara's life will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at the Orleans Inn. The burial will be private.
