BARBARA G. LAURIE, AIA, NOMA 1961-2013
The family of Barbara G. Laurie, AIA, NOMA, regrets to inform you of her passing February 7, 2013. Professor Laurie was a 1985 graduate of Howard University's School of Architecture and Design. She served the University for 20 years, concluding her tenure as Associate Professor of Architecture. After an award-winning association with Devrouax & Purnell Architects, she founded and was Managing Principal of DP+ Partners, LLC. Barbara Laurie's landmark work 200+, provided focused visibility for African American women in architecture. She was also Past President, AIA/DC; President, Washington Architectural Foundation; Board Member, DC Preservation League; and Trustee, Howard University Math & Science Middle School. Family will receive friends on Friday, February 15 from 5 to 9 p.m. at McGuire Funeral Home, 7400 Georgia Avenue NW. On Saturday, February 16 memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. at the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel on the campus of Howard University, 6th Street and Howard Place NW. In lieu of flowers, donations may be offered to: The Barbara G. Laurie Memorial Scholarship Fund, Howard University Department of Architecture, Howard H. Barabara will sorely be missed. She has touched so many, always with amazing energy, selfless dedication, and good cheer. It's really hard to believe she's gone. In a way she isn't -- so long as her memory lives on in so many of us.

My God comfort the family in this difficult time. I knew Prof. Laurie as a student and a professor. I worked in the Dean's Office of A&D during her tenure. She was a lovely, pleasant and hard working Architect, teacher and friend. She will be missed.

I played a song yesterday by R. Kelly called "When a woman loves"and it reminded me of Barbara. Whomever she knew, she gave 100% and that person was better because of it. I know I am.
