Barbara Mumma Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 1, 2024.
Barbara Jane Mumma (née Stokes-Rees), born on February 3, 1933, as a British citizen in India, departed this life on June 27, 2024, in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, at the venerable age of 91. A woman of remarkable intellect and grace, Barbara's degree from Oxford University prepared her for her position as a librarian at the University of Pennsylvania Archives. She went on to become a devoted wife, loving mother, and involved grandmother.

Barbara's personal pursuits were as rich and diverse as her character. She found solace in the tranquility of her garden, enjoyed her summers on Cayuga Lake, delighted in the intricacies of the French language, and was a voracious consumer of historical knowledge. Her daily routine often included the challenge of crossword puzzles, and she held a deep appreciation for the complexities of politics, the melodies of classical music, and the beauty of fine art. She contributed her talents to the Craft Guild at Ridley Creek State Park, where she shared her love for creativity with others.

Her essence was defined by her loving, supportive, and open-minded nature, complemented by a bright and playful demeanor. Barbara was a pillar of encouragement and resilience, fiercely independent throughout her life.

The family she leaves behind includes her son, William Mumma; daughter-in-law, BrendaRose Simkin; grandchildren, Ellie and Charlotte Mumma; and sisters, Susan Sayers and Jennifer Bartoli. She was preceded in her journey by her husband, Fred Mumma, and her brother, Michael Stokes-Rees.

A hybrid memorial service will be conducted at Haverford Friends Meeting on the afternoon of Saturday, October 19, at 4:00 pm (Zoom link available upon request.) To honor Barbara's memory, the family suggests that charitable donations be made to Doctors Without Borders. The arrangements for Barbara's interment have been entrusted to West Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Barbara Mumma's legacy is one of wisdom, kindness, and an enduring zest for life. She will be profoundly missed and eternally remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
