Barbara Schnabel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 28 to Dec. 29, 2022.
Barbara Ann (Zuchowski) Schnabel died after a brief illness at MidState Medical Center on December 20, 2022. She was 76.

Born in Meriden on September 11, 1946, the daughter of Joseph W. and Julia Slezak Zuchowski, she lived most of her life in the city. She graduated from Platt High School with Honors and obtained her nursing certificate from St. Francis School of Nursing in 1967. She later earned her BS from the University of St. Joseph, West Hartford.

She worked for a number of years at W.W.II Veterans' Memorial Hospital in Meriden, and later on at several local nursing homes. Before her marriage to Arthur Schnabel she spent two years nursing in Florida.

Barbara was an athletic person. In her younger years, she was active in the Meriden Ski Club, and she and her husband went hiking, played tennis and traveled to many parts of the world. Arthur was devoted to model trains and Barbara accompanied him to train meetings and to photography club events. She was also an enthusiastic and experienced gardener, maintaining a small greenhouse at the home she shared with Arthur in Newington.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents and her husband (who died in 2002). She is survived by cousins Judith Kierys of New London and Betty MacLeod of east Longmeadow, MA, and by good friends, especially Betsy Tyrrell of Berlin.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling on hours on Wednesday, December 28th (TODAY) from 10 to 11a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden. A funeral service will begin at 11a.m. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. For online condolences, please see jferryfh.com.

I am in Florida and was so very sorry to learn Barbara had passed away. I went to nursing school with her at St. Francis and also worked with her at Memorial Hospital. She had a good sense of humor and we shared many good times. May she rest in peace.
