Barbara Sibbald Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 8, 2025.
Barbara Elizabeth Sibbald (née Chatland) passed away on March 2, 2025, in Orangeville, Ontario. She was born on December 26, 1940, to Albert Chatland (2010) and Marion Vingoe (1969). Though she lost her mother too soon, she found a cherished bond with her stepmother, Marjorie Nickel (2018). She treasured her younger brother, Michael Chatland (2010) his wife, Maureen, as well as her many cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and their families. Barbara endured the heartbreaking loss of her son Sean in 2003 and her beloved husband Jack in 2018. Now reunited with those she deeply loved, she leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and unwavering love.

Barbara grew up in Waterdown and Burlington, where her fun-loving nature flourished. After graduating from nursing school in 1961, she formed lifelong friendships with her classmates-strong, intelligent women dedicated to caring for others. These friendships remained steadfast over the years, as did many others from high school, work, and the various places she called home, including Hamilton, Brampton, Orangeville, Florida, the farm, and the lake.

Barbara met Jack while working as his nurse in the hospital. They married on April 19, 1962, in the chapel at McMaster University and shared 56 wonderful years together. In 1967, they welcomed their daughter Susan, followed by their son Sean in 1970. Barbara was a devoted mother not only to them but also to many others who considered her a second mom. Susan married Paul in 1997, and he became another son to Barbara and one of her favorite people.

Her greatest joy was her family. She adored her grandsons Jackson and Carson and took immense pride in their lives. Carson's partner Karsyn became part of that love as well. Her great-grandchildren Kaydence and Westyn brought renewed joy into her life after Jack's passing.

Barbara's kindness extended beyond family; she made everyone feel valued and cherished. Her home was always filled with laughter, music, and delicious meals shared around the table. Whether at the house, the farm, the cottage, or Florida, guests were welcomed with open arms and left feeling loved.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all who kept in touch with Barbara through visits, cards, and messages. Deep gratitude to the staff in the Mariposa unit at Avalon. Their kindness ensured that even in her final days, Barb remained herself, right down to the daily application of her signature lipstick. Thank you for doing that for her.

Merrit Malloy wrote: "Love doesn't die, People do. So, when all that's left of me Is love, Give me away."

In honor of Barbara's journey, donations to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada would be greatly appreciated.

As per her wishes, Barbara has been cremated, and interment will take place in the spring at Boston Mills Cemetery. Details of a celebration of life will follow at a later date. May her memory continue to bring comfort and joy to all who knew her.
