What a wonderful, kind generous woman! She changed my life for the better the moment she met me, offering concern and support. I have never met anyone with a kinder heart. God speed Barbara. I will cherish your memory forever.

What a wonderful memory to have that Barbara was in our life. Her and Charlie are family to us no mater what the records say. Growing up with her kids around and sharing meals, tears, and more than a few laughs are what make up the gift she was to the Hengst family. May the loving hand of God envelope the Spates family and the extension of friends they all touched..

I have known Barbara since Immanuel Lutheran School days. Even though she was a year ahead of me, for 3 years we were in the same classroom; one teacher taught 2 grades. I cannot remember a time when she was not crazy about Charles Spates! No matter how much he teased her, she was smitten with him and he with her. They were a perfect match and that can now continue. Barbara was such a sweet and thoughtful person; who could not love her? She will be missed but never forgotten. Jo Ann Shoup

To Michelle, Karen and Laura Your mother was an awesome woman! So many joyous memories come flooding back whenever I think of Barbara she was the greatest co-worker and friend to so many people, especially me. We spent many, many great times together working hard (and playing just as hard!), and she was always a joy to be around. I remember that she had to convince me that I did not have the flu but that I was pregnant the very first time I was in shock, but she thought it was the greatest gift ever! And she was right. Children fill your life with purpose, light and hope for all that can be, and she adored you girls. You were, quite literally, her life. Please know that she will be missed dearly by so many people, but also thought of in ways that will make us all smile. She was such a soft touch. With my deepest sympathies.

Barbara was one of my absolute favorite people when we both worked at Vinson & Elkins. She was a consummate professional, amazing at her job, but took all of us under her wing and made us laugh, as well. My condolences to you, her beloved family. You were all the most important priority that she had.

Thank you for being such a dear friend, Barbara. You, Janice and I had some fun times together, especially when we had our poker games, when Charles joined in as well. Now, you can join and see Janice and Charles and have your own poker games. You were also a great help when we worked at V&E, where I first met you. Joe and I will miss you and love you dearly.

You all are in my thoughts and prayers and my heart aches for you. Even though I only known her for a short period of time, I felt like I have known her forever. She was such a sweet, genuine person. Love you all

Michelle, Karen and Laura - I've known your family all of my life. Barbara was like a second mom to me for many years. I've loved your family like my own. I will miss her tremendously. I'm so happy I was able to spend several hours with her last year in May. My heart goes out to you and all of your families. Love you very much. Wish I could be there.

My dear Aunt Barbara. I can't remember my life without you in it. Your love for your girls, grandchildren and Charles were unparalleled. I remember coming to your house with my sister and playing with my dear cousins. Who would take on five girls except you and Uncle Charles? You had the best games for us to play. Pie in the face, operation, easy bake ovens, snow cone makers, we played with them all. Then there was Uncle Charles who would jump out and chase us as we screamed and ran around your house like we were crazy. You would shout at him to stop. Of course he ignored you and the game went on. I miss the innocence of those times and I miss you. I am keeping your family close in my prayers. My heart is truly broken.
