It is with great sorrow that the family of Barbara Szczotka announces her passing on Friday, February 28, 2014 at the age of 58 years, after a long and unforgiving battle with cancer. Barbara was born in Poland and married her loving husband Jan on September 17, 1977. Barbara immigrated to Canada with her family in June 1993, and pursued her passion working as a child caregiver at Somerset Child Care. Her incredible love and compassion for children and family will forever be remembered, and missed by all who knew her. Barbara's unsurpassed passion for life, generosity and love filled the hearts of many who surrounded her. She cherished spending time with her family in the outdoors; travelling with her husband and caring for her home, making it look pristine. Barbara also loved spending quiet days with her husband watching films and reading. Barbara is survived by her forever loving husband of 37 years Jan; her cherished sons Marcin and Jakub; father Stanislaw; sister Danuta; and sisters-in-law Aniela and Jadwiga and their families. She was predeceased by her mother Helena.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to thank all the staff at Foothills Country Hospice for making Barbara's last months as comfortable as possible considering her illness. If friends so desire donations can be made directly to the Foothills Country Hospice. In living memory of Barbara Szczotka, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.

I was just remembering Barbara yesterday when I was visiting my cousin in Foothills Country Hospice! My Mom had been in Hospice next door to Barbara when she was there. I said to my husband, "what a lovely lady was here in this room and she and her family would wave to us from her window when we would come and leave. I didn't know her well, but do remember how her husband and family would be there to support her daily. Blessings to you as you carry on.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. As I've just learned of Barbara's passing. She was an amazing woman with such a loving heart. She looked after my two boys at the daycare. We feel like we got to know you during our Mum's stay in the room across from Barbara's at the Foothills Hospice. Our hearts are sad knowing that she lost her battle a few short weeks after our Mum passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Jennifer and Kathy - Sheila's daughters from room 13.

Heartfelt condolences to Jan and family - we are so sorry for your loss. Glad to have met you all at Foothills Country Hospice, you are a loving family and I saw how you made every day special for Barbara's time there comfortable and enjoyable. My thoughts and sympathy go out to Barbara's family. She was a wonderful woman with such a warm heart and a contagious laugh. She was so caring and had such a fantastic sense of humor. She will be forever remembered and I hope you find comfort in knowing she is now a guardian angel to watch over you. I will always have special memories of Barbara, she will be sadly missed.
