Barbey marked the brightest spot in our early teenage years at Hillsdale. We loved weekends at her lovely country home of her parents when left with the poodles in the care of the help while the Nyces went to Florida. On bikes we found the best ice cream places.
As adults we had a common interest in Maine, where my family had summered on an island off Mt. Desert for generations. While visiting, Barbey had no interest in meeting boys, as she had already set her heart on Ned. Visiting them decades later at Biddeford showed how much their shared interests, specifically in cooking and gardening, made them a terrific team in house and yard.
I have last year's Christmas card on the shelf beside me, a permanent home.

To Ned, Mark, Chris, Jesse, Cookie, and all of your spouses and children...

To me, Barbie was one of those people whose passion and energy was bigger than words can describe. I first met her on the tennis courts in Biddeford Pool in 1990 and have ceaselessly been amazed by her zest for life. She was a role model and woman ahead of her times. Barbie exemplified an amazing balance between love of Family and career, while simultaneously maintaining her passion for her personal interests. She was an example to me and many others, on how to live life to the fullest. Barbie, you and your amazing attitude will certainly be missed.
Sincerely, Jane Kettler

So sorry, Ned. We know how well you cared for her and you know how much we loved sharing our anniversary. She was a fun lady as well as being so smart! Mexican zinnias were her favorite!

We were very sad to read this news. Barbey was a wonderful neighbor and we fondly remember our chats and dog walks. The world has lost a special person. Our sincere condolences to Ned and the entire family.

I am so sorry my parents, Carol and Joe Bain, are not here to express their concolences to Barbey's family. As you probably know, my dad passed on December 30. In going through his things, I found a Christmas card from the Doughertys, and I'm sure he was very happy to hear from you. My parents always spoke highly of both of you and enjoyed your friendship over the years at the Pool. Please extend my sympathy to your whole family.

I never stopped thinking of you Need and Barbey. My time with her was short but she was really good to be around and I really enjoyed being with her!!

Fond but short memories will be inspired by by her strength and will.

My sincere condolences to you Need and your entire family.

My wife of 61 years and friend and companion for 65. She will always be in my heart with abundant memories of picnics, body surfing and the joys of raising thee outstanding sons. We travelled the world together and read every sign on every painting in every museum we visited. We read and discussed books together and wherever we lived we joined or started a book group. Her absence leaves a huge void in my life. I love you sweetly.
