Born and raised in
New York Mills, NY, and served in the US Army during WWII. In 1963, he bought a house in Prospect at an auction and worked tirelessly on it for two hours every day before his shift at Bendix, eventually making it his home for more than 60 years, a true testament to his perseverance.
We would like to respectfully acknowledge his biological family, the Dudeks and their extended families, as they navigate this period of loss and
grief.as well.
His life became forever intertwined with Murtie Belle D. Allen's in the 1960s. As they grew together, their bond strengthened, and they found comfort in each other's presence. Murtie Belle, born on January 2, 1915, and passing away on May 19, 1997, was the love of Grampa Benny's life. He cherished and loved her until her passing, and their relationship remained a testament to the power of true companionship. The Allen family and neighborhood kids fondly remembered them as "Gramma Murtie Belle" and "Grampa Benny," a duo whose love and affection for each other inspired all who knew them.
Grampa Benny's presence was a staple at every significant event in the (Murtie Belle) Allen family's life, from all the holidays and birthdays to graduations, weddings, and countless other celebrations, never once missing family dinner on Sundays. His unwavering dedication and love earned him a revered place in the family's heart, demonstrating that the bonds of love and devotion surpass those of blood or legal documentation. He embodied the notion that family is not solely defined by blood ties or formal recognition, but by the love and commitment shared among its members.
Grampa Benny was preceded in death by his beloved Murtie Belle, who passed away in 1997. And whom he cared for deeply: David Allen Sr., who considered him a father figure, in 2014, and his grandson in-kind, Pete Potter, in 2009.
Surviving are :
Daughter-in-kind, Patsy Ratley-Allen (Dave Sr)
Pat was the one who ensured that Sunday family dinners continued, a tradition that brought Benny immense joy and comfort, particularly after the passing of his beloved Murtie Belle. These family gatherings were a testament to the love and resilience that bound them together, and they played a significant role in helping Benny cope with his loss.
Beloved Granddaughter, Dawn (Allen) Potter
who shared a memorable and unbreakable lifelong bond and formed a profoundly meaningful and lasting connection, frequently referring to it as a 'heart to heart' relationship that transcended the ordinary and spoke directly to the soul. Being fortunate to spend quality time with her Grampa in his final years, supporting his daily routines exactly as he did and ensuring he remained comfortable at home. Not taking care of him, rather taking care in his life's activities. She was fortunate to have him as her daily sidekick! Bringing him coffee, breakfast, and dinner, and take him on drives to appointments and shopping adventures together. The post office was also on our list, where Heidi would give him a friendly check-in. I'd prep his mail and pay his bills while he enjoyed his coffee.
Growing up, we had a special way of saying goodbye, using the playful phrase see ya later alligator, see you in awhile crocodile - it was more than just words, it was a connection that made our bond stronger, and even though you're no longer here, it still brings me comfort to hold onto that tradition, knowing that I'll always be your gator and you'll always be my crocodile, and that even though we're apart, we'll always see each other again, whether it's later or in awhile.

The Ratley family deserves a special mention for being an integral part of our family gatherings and for their love for Benny. Additionally, we cherish the memories of Donna McLaughlin (David Allen Jr), who left us in Dec 2024, and children Tori and Tyler (Christman) who brought joy to our family when they were very little although they may not remember, we do.
The Halpin family deserves recognition for their enduring friendship with the Allen family, which was built on a foundation of love and mutual respect, including a deep affection for Gramma Murtie Belle and Grampa Benny.
Barney was a beloved fixture in the Prospect community, where his daily routine was a source of comfort and delight for his neighbors. Tom and Barb (Wolcott) Fernando, who took over the Wolcott's family home didn't next door to Barney, were particularly special to Barney, and Tom's kindness and support ensured that Barney's life was comfortable and free from worry. Whether it was lawn mowing, snowblowing, or tending to trees and bees, Tom was always there to lend a helping hand. Barney also cherished his relationships with neighbors Roberta and neighbpr Carol, and many others in town, who treated him with the respect and dignity he deserved.
His passing leaves an immense void in our lives, not only because of the profound love we shared but also due to the loss of his remarkable life experiences and stories that spanned an astonishing 103 years.
