Bayne LOGAN Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Jun. 3, 2015.
LOGAN, Bayne Stuart Tweedsmuir
It is with deep regret that we announce Bayne Stuart Tweedsmuir Logan, born in Pembroke, Ontario March 9, 1940 has passed away May 30, 2015. A man who put family above all else, he was a beloved husband of 50 years to his high school sweetheart Marion (Pappin) Logan and father to Martin Cecil Logan (Karen). He loved and was loved by his only grandchild and namesake Stuart Malcolm Logan. Much respected big brother to Anne Hepburn (Lyle) and William Logan (Donna) and son of the late Martin and Callie Logan of Pembroke. Born and raised in Pembroke, Ontario, he completed his elementary education in one-room schoolhouses, often taught by his mother, Callie. He studied at McMaster University, completing his undergraduate degree there. Graduate studies followed at University of Ottawa, where he earned his Master of Arts and a Doctorate specializing in educational psychology. After being involved with the Ontario Crippled Children's Centre in Toronto, his lifelong interest in psychological and spiritual well-being was sparked. He would take this interest into every facet of his career and personal life. Dr. Logan was subsequently recruited to return to the University of Ottawa, where he had a distinguished and decorated career teaching graduate students in research design, statistics, ethics, counselling and education. He served in a number of administrative roles, including Director of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies in Education. He was privileged to teach at St. Paul University in Ottawa in the Faculty of Theology. Hundreds of graduate students have his wisdom and guidance to thank for their academic success – he was both a patient and supportive supervisor and teacher and everyone who learned with him benefited. Upon retirement from the world of academia, Bayne returned to the Ottawa Valley and renewed his love of farming. Haying his fields on his favourite tractor was a passion and a genuine joy – he enjoyed the intimate connection to the cycles of life. The cattle were an occasional frustration but he enjoyed this world as much as he enjoyed every other aspect of life. An accomplished musician, Bayne's trumpet playing took him to many wonderful places and he always played beautifully. A playful sense of humour infused his every interaction; he was quick with a joke and had a wonderful sense of timing. He genuinely enjoyed meeting people and his respect and warmth ensured that you never just had a short chat – he wanted to know everything about you. Bayne's prodigious memory ensured that each of these details was subsequently remembered when he met you next. He deeply respected the individual, and this belief shaped him and made him the man he was. Friends are invited to share their memories of Bayne with his family during Visitation at the MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 296 Isabella Street, Pembroke on Saturday, June 6, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. No flowers please, donations to the Pembroke General Hospital MRI Fund in his memory would be an honour.

Greatly saddened to hear of Bayne's death. He was always a much greater trumpeter than I, but I enjoyed our trumpet trio in PCI. Deepest sympathy, Marion

It is with great regrets that I have learned of Bayne's passing away. He was a precious colleague at the University of Ottawa, a person that always had time and ears for his others, especially me. Bayne, thanks you for the fond memories and the close friendship. I will forever cherish our find momentes and our last goodbye, sitting on a Farmall tractor at Elliot's in Pembrooke.
Go in peace my friend!
