Beatrice Halsell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 14, 2025.
It is with deep love and remembrance that we announce the passing of Beatrice Halsell (Smith), a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, who departed this life on October 30, 2024, in Chicago, Illinois. She was 87 years old.

Beatrice was born on June 24, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Fannie Smith (Armstead) and Ernest Smith. She was the sixth of eight children-Walter, John, Juanita, Sidelle, Ernestine, KatieMae, and Barnett (Chuck)-all raised by their devoted single mother.

In her journey through life Beatrice met and married Gentle Lee Halsell. She was the devoted mother of four children: Cynthia, Gentle Lee Jr., Norris, and baby Otis, (who preceded her in death). She also lovingly embraced her two stepchildren, Gentel and Lavita.

A natural caregiver at heart, Beatrice dedicated herself to nurturing those around her with unwavering devotion. Fiercely protective and deeply loving, she ensured that her children always felt safe and supported.

Beatrice's honesty was one of her most defining qualities. She never hesitated to speak her mind with words of care, love and compassion that was a source strength for those fortunate enough to know her.

At the young age of 20, Beatrice began a decades-long battle with cancer. Through every trial she faced-including her final fight with bladder cancer-she remained courageous and steadfast. Her resilience inspired all who witnessed her journey. Even as she confronted adversity, she held onto hope and grace with an unbreakable spirit.

Music brought Beatrice immense joy. Her singing filled the home with warmth and laughter; it was not just a pastime but an expression of her inner light. Her voice lifted spirits and created cherished memories for those around her.

Although she once believed she might not live long due to illness, Beatrice set her sights on reaching 100 years old.

Though that milestone was not reached, the dream itself became a source of strength that carried her through each day with optimism and grace.

Beatrice leaves behind a legacy rooted in love, honesty, and enduring strength. She is survived by her children Cynthia, Gentle Lee Jr., Norris; her stepchildren Gentel (Dwight) and Lavita; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and friends whose lives were deeply touched by her presence and she had close relationships with all of them.

She held a special place in her heart for each of her grandchildren and was especially close to her granddaughter Jamila.

Jamila's daily support and companionship during Beatrice's time of need were a testament to their profound bond.

Beatrice also shared a treasured connection with her great-niece Sonserrae ("Dimples"), whose love and presence brought her comfort and joy.

Beatrice's infectious smile and warm presence left an indelible mark on everyone she met. Her willingness to help others made her a beacon of kindness in the lives of many.

As we honor the memory of Queen Bea, we celebrate a life defined by resilience, truthfulness, compassion-and above all-a deep love for family.

Thank you Mom for the lessons you taught us, the love you gave us, and the strength you showed us every day. We will carry your memory in our hearts forever.

With love,

Cynthia, Gentle Lee Jr., Norris, and family

Yesterday

Auntie Bea was the the Sister my grandmother didn't grow up having as she was the only girl of 3 children, one of which Auntie Bea married, Uncle Gentle Lee. Being raised in the home of my grandmother allowed me an up close look into many of the relationships that she built, and this is one that was nurtured well. Aunt Bea would come over and our families would hang out for hours on end. Aunt Bea hand an energy about her that would light up a room, a smile as bright as the sun, and she glowed every time I saw her. Those hang outs with granny and Aunt Bea were some exciting days that will truly be missed. My sincerest condolences to my cousins, praying strength and peace unto you all.
