Eulogy, by daughter, Sharon Henry, delivered at Beatrice's funeral in the Walden Chapel at Whites Chapel United Methodist Church, March 3, 2024:
EULOGY OF BEATRICE ELIZABETH SCALLY
December 8, 1926 - March 28, 2024
By Her Loving Daughter, Sharon
Welcome everyone. Thank you all for being here to honor the life and love of my mom, Bea, a dear treasured person who I was Blessed to enjoy for my entire life.
My mom, 97 years old, lived a long life and was from the greatest generation that ever lived. She witnessed firsthand the horrors and challenges of WWII. Her 3 brothers and husband were all deployed behind enemy lines during that time while she worked to support the war effort by making ammunition with my Aunt Elenore and collecting nylon stockings to convert into parachutes. She was a true patriot.
Bea was a 3-year-old little girl who witnessed the Great Depression of 1929, where she and her brothers walked the railroad tracks in Woodbridge, NJ, collecting coal that had fallen from the trains in order to heat their home.
Mom witnessed the invention of the television, electricity and plumbing in homes, the telephone, the computer, the jet engine and so many major inventions too many to mention. She never learned to use a computer, but she could do wonders with a sewing machine, making clothes for her entire family, so her children always had nice things to wear.
My mom worked very hard in her lifetime, with 4 children and never enough money to go around, she worked for Singer Sewing Machines and taught sewing by day and worked in restaurants by night to secure a home for the family. Dad worked 2 jobs as well.
Later in her life, she was able to travel with Dad, enjoying a wonderful 2-week trip to Hawaii, as well as a trip to Dad´s homeland of Ireland. Over the years, Mom traveled many places around the world with me, my sons Justin and Christopher by land and by cruise ship, often with Aunt Elenor, and then with her Son-in-Law, Robert; Robert´s mother, Helen; and even a cruise that included her brother, my Uncle Bob Lindros.
She also traveled to visit her Step-niece, Stephanie when Stephanie lived in NYC, and enjoyed visiting with Steph´s husband, Scott, and their family. Mom, Robert, and I went to visit Stephanie during Thanksgiving well before the Covid Pandemic. We had tickets to Radio City, the ferry to The Statute of Liberty and many other tourist spots in NYC. Before we headed out for the day, Stephanie put the frozen Turkey outside her top-level apartment window overlooking the Hudson River in the Downtown financial district of NYC. When we returned, we were wondering why so many birds were flying around outside, only to learn, upon retrieving the Turkey from outside, it was now a carcass, picked clean by vultures (maybe they were just pigeons in disguise). What a laugh we had, and then we ordered takeout. Mom always cherished visiting with her nephew, Philip, chatting about family and old times. Leslie was a special friend to mom and their fun together shopping at Stein Mart and going for lunch and enjoying a Margarita together were meaningful highlights of hers.
So were visits from my late Brother, Tommy, who, with his best friend Lou, flew the country in Lou´s private plane, stopping twice at our home. Bea also got to enjoy many family gatherings with her Step Granddaughters, Jennifer and Ali, and their families, her Great Grandchildren, and watching all of them blossom and grow. We flew several times to Colorado, bringing mom to visit with Liam and Ronen, and enjoying time with Justin and Katie. Those are all cherished memories.
And, my mother loved this place, White´s Chapel. She had strong faith in God and would always inspire me with her stories of perseverance to give hope to me and family and friends at low points in our lives. And to praise us with joy and jubilation upon our accomplishments, however big or small, always the cheerleader. Her wit and humor along with her selfless love to all of us will greatly be missed.
Somehow, her ability to make a comfort meal with great conversation made her a magnet to want to be around.
My heart has a big open hole in it. Although I will forever grieve her loss, I celebrate her greatest trip to heaven to forever be with Jesus and being reunited with my Dad and all of her loved ones, and pets.
I love you mom with all of my heart.
Sharon
