Ben Pollard Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 27, 2016.
Ben Marksbury Pollard February 27, 1932 - November 11, 2016 San Diego Colonel Ben Pollard was born in Shelbyville, Kentucky and graduated in engineering from Purdue University. It was at Purdue that Ben met the love of his life, Joan! They spent a short time together at Caterpillar (gaining a streak of yellow paint in their blood) before Ben entered into the Air Force and Pilot Training. Ben would fall in love again with flyingthe thrills, the excitement, the other pilots and especially teaching students to fly complex, difficult airplanes. It was a love affair at first sight. Then it was back to Purdue for a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering before the family, now three with son Mark, headed for the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. It was another love affair for everyone: the mountains of Colorado, skiing, the West and teaching engineering to some of the best students, ever! Along came daughter, Ginny, who then completed the family. Teaching in the spectacular AFA teaching facilities with dedicated, bright, fellow instructors and their families made for wonderful camaraderie. But all good things must end. Ben was selected to fly the F105 (another love) for possibly one of the most dangerous missions in Vietnam as the first crew in Ryan's Raiders. He was shot down on his 11th mission, after which the Ryan's Raiders mission was thankfully ended. Ben spent almost six years as a POW in the infamous Hanoi Hilton, while Joan would be both wonderful mother and father to Mark and Ginny. For 3 years of the 6, his family would not even know if Ben was alive. He came home with many physical difficulties but to a happy, healthy, wholesome family. After returning to the AFA, he taught Aeronautical Engineering. He was then promoted to Colonel and was selected to be one of the two Deputy Commandants. He was charged with all military training, soaring and survival tactics. He was especially proud of playing a lead role in bringing the first class of women to the Academy, accomplishing the task in a mere 9 months. In 1976, he became Commander of the AFA Preparatory School, while also being a sailplane instructor. After leaving the Air Force, he served as Vice President of STARNET Corporation, a small pioneering telecommunication company, as well as President of the NAMPOW Vietnam POW organization. Ben Pollard received the Distinguished Engineering Award from Purdue University in 1979 and was the recipient of an Honorary PhD in 2012 from Purdue University. During his Air Force career, he also received two Silver Stars, two Legions of Merits, two Bronze Star Medals with the "V" Device to signify combat heroism, and two Purple Hearts. In recent years, computers, teaching computers, theatre, the symphony, the family and worldwide travel with Joan became his new loves. Most of all, his heart burst with pride as he watched the wonder of the accomplishments of his family, Mark with Laurie, and Ginny with Steve, and grandchildren Rachel and Sarah Pollard and Dave and Tom Lorenc.Throughout his career, he proved to be both a courageous and exemplary leader, innovator, and educator. In his words, "We had many twists and turns, but Life was a Blast!Services will be held at 10:30, Friday, Dec. 2 at the RB Community Presbyterian Church, 17010 Pomerado Road, Rancho Bernardo, CAGifts in loving memory can be made to Free Wheelchair Mission, 15279 Alton Parkway, Suite 300, Irvine, CA 92618

My belated condolences to you all on the passing of Ben. My parents, Blaine and Ann Butler, were dear friends of Ben and Joan. Having just finished a book on the nurses in vietnam, I researched Ben and found the oral history project he contributed to as well as his passing. My parents considered Ben and Joan dear friends and I grew up in Colorado Springs hearing their names often. It was good to learn more of Ben's accomplishments, including being a wonderful husband and father. Laura Butler Wallace

My husband and I were just watching a program on TV about WWII and the program also spoke of a man who had been POW during that war. This made me think of the name on my POW bracelet, at time of Vietnam War. It was Pollard, but I forget the first name. I just did some searching on the web, and found this info about Col. Ben Pollard. It was a thrill to discover that he did get home and that others prayed for him during his time as a POW. I am sorry I didn’t look sooner and discover this! I live in Colorado Springs and perhaps I could have met him while he was here. Thoughts and prayers to any of his family who might read this note. We are grateful for this brave man who served our country!

It was an honor to be a student under his command at the Prep School in 1978-79. He was a good man, and inspiring leader and role model, and I remember clearly the moment when I introduced my parents to him, standing in front of him, saluting and almost losing my balance (he was taller than me), and requesting to have my parents meet him. My condolences to his family and friends.

So sorry for your loss. I just found my POW bracelet with his name on it that I wore for many years while in high school. I am so happy that he returned alive to a loving family and was able to accomplish so much after his return. I just felt the need to reach out. God bless.

My father passed away this year and we just cleaned out his home (my father was also in the Air Force) we found his old POW bracelet - it was Col Ben Pollard - I googled Col Pollards name and am happy to see he was able to return home - would love to return his bracelet to his family.

Col. Ben Pollard was an incredibly brave man and endured things no human being should ever have to. Deep, grateful thanks for his service to our country. He was a wonderful friend to my father, Col. Eugene Raab, USAF Ret. It was an honor to have known him. Please accept my and my father's sincere condolences on your loss. Be gentle with yourselves. Sending your family love and best wishes. XO

Ben,
At the Air Force Academy, your office was across the hall from mine in DFMA.. You left in '67 for SEA. Then got word you went down over Kep, NVN. Came back to the AFA in '73.

In '74, you accepted my invitation to speak at our Academy's Math Faculty get-together. You spoke clearly and unemotionally of your years in Hanoi. Must have been tough. We all knew of the agonizing memories you carried within. You were a tough guy, Ben, reflected in the words of L.H. Dicketson's:

Fate Whispers, "You Cannot Withstand The Storm."
The Warrior Whispers, "I Am The Storm."

Dear Joan and family,
It has been many years since we have been in touch with you.
Tonight (24 April 2017) while watching TV we saw a beautiful field of flowers that looked like the flower fields we saw north of San Diego when we lived there for a couple of years some years ago. Since we visited with you and Ben there, I immediately thought Joan and Ben Pollard! Anne immediately Googled Ben Pollard and we found his obit.

So sorry to learn of his passing this past November.
May the Lord be with you and your family. Thank you for your friendship at First Pres Colorado Springs, at the Academy, and for years afterward.

Love to you all,
Tom and Anne Eller

Ben,
In 1965, you and I shared a cross-way office at the Air Force Academy. You were in Aero, I Math. I recall you going to Thuds, SEA. Shortly, we got word you went down over Kep AF, NVN.

I met you again after own tour in SEA, as I began my second tour at the Academy. You returned in early '74, once again to the Aero Dept, and also on the military side of the Academy, the Commandant's shop.

You accepted my invite to speak at our math conference, an in-depth talk of your experiences in the Hilton, which moved us all, and for which I thank you again.

You were a good egg, Ben. An unpretentious and regular Joe. To be missed by all.
