Ben SAWATZKY Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix on Jan. 9, 2018.
Sawatzky, Ben
December 29, 1933 – January 4, 2018
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ben Sawatzky on Thursday, January 4, 2018. Ben was predeceased by his loving wife Doris, his parents Ben and Dora Sawatzky and his sister Dora Dyck. He will be deeply missed by his daughter Carol Hildebrand and son Wayne Sawatzky (Corinne), grandchildren Jonathon Hildebrand (Shaylyn Ridley), Brandon Hildebrand (Sydney Watson), Adam Sawatzky, April Fehr (Tim), and Danielle Sawatzky (Eric Klassen), and great- grandfather to Natalie Fehr and soon to arrive baby Hildebrand. Ben was born and raised in Saskatoon and attended high school at City Park Collegiate. Ben first worked for Sterling Distributors then Reliance Saskatoon. At Reliance he got his first big raise to $1.00/hour! He then moved on to work for the City of Saskatoon, where he retired after 35 years in the purchasing department. Ben was also an active member of the Union for the city employees. In his high school years he fell in love with participating in multiple different sports which continued throughout his life. Ben would run 5 miles per day until he had both hips replaced. He participated in the Cariboo Run, Louis Riel Relay and multiple other marathons. Ben went on several river canoe trips, was actively involved in with the Saskatoon Archery Club, and loved spending his summer days at his favourite spot which was Emma Lake. At Emma Lake Ben loved to ride his bike on the trails and spend time relaxing at his trailer with his Lake friends. For many years Ben would make an annual trip to Northern Saskatchewan with his favourite fishing buddies! Grandpa Ben played a very active role in his grandchildren's lives. They will deeply miss sharing supper in his kitchen, him coaching them in archery, and most of all his unconditional love and hugs. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ben's memory to a charity of one's choice. At Ben's request a Celebration of Life will be held at Hillcrest Funeral Home (east on 8th St, first right past Briargate Rd) on Friday January 12, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.hillcrestmemorial.ca Arrangements entrusted to Jamie Rugg.

Ben and I played ball together in the 60's and he was a very good ball player and team mate. We went on annual fishing trips and had a lot of fun. We got together many times over the last few years. He enjoyed his laptop and enjoyed sending and receiving forwards. He was a very good guy and will be missed. He often spoke of Wayne and Carol and the grand children. Our deepest sympathy to all of his family

I learned much from Ben while working with him at City Purchasing. His honesty, intelligence, progressive thinking and work ethic earned him the respect of all who worked with Ben. I am so sorry for your loss.

Ben was a wonderful person. We worked together for years in the City's purchasing and materials management department. I valued his knowledge and experience greatly, and he was always willing to share it. He will be missed!
