LOWE
BENJAMIN ALEXANDER
Age 35, of Brookline and Wilkinsburg went to his ancestors on December 21, 2016. Beloved son of Randi Lowe and Chester Lowe of Grand Rapids, Michigan; beloved stepson of Frank Sanders of Wilkinsburg; beloved brother of Aaron (Elizabeth) Lowe and Lucas Sanders; predeceased by his partner, Suzanne Hazeem. Ben was known as an intelligent, insightful moderator of news discussion on several media platforms, including Facebook, over the last few years. He had been an online fixture for much longer. He encouraged dialogue and idea sharing among large groups of people who sometimes had very different views. Ben was public in regard to his personal demons and struggles. He believed strongly in the value of knowledge, truth and the ability of people to form ways to face challenges together and overcome what rips them apart. A memorial to celebrate his life is being planned. Local Arrangements by the JOHN D. O'CONNOR AND SON FUNERAL HOME, INC., 5106 Second Avenue, Pittsburgh 15207, 412-521-8116.

I knew Ben in high school. I was recently looking up old friends and found this obituary and also learned more about Ben's struggles.

When I lose a person, seeing photos I haven't seen before or in a long time always brings some joy. So here is his photo from the Oakland School's 1996 yearbook when he was just a freshman. It's a pretty good photo.

My condolences to Ben's family.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm in recovery myself for the last 4 years and it saddens me to see good people lose the fight of addiction. Your family is in my prayers!

I remember as I walked across the stage at a church and tripping over all the cords they had on the floor to become your God mother, only me. I will always remember teaching you how to scream. I share that short story will people all the time. I feel honored to have been your god mother and I just know I will meet with you again some day in heaven.. A beautiful obituary you wrote Randi, for a beautiful son

I remember the first time I met Ben...
It was February 2009... Sue Hazeem brought him over to my house so I could meet him.
We sat around the kitchen table and had hot chocolate.
He left a big impression on me, he was different, marched to his own drummer and I could tell he was extremely intelligent and sensitive.

And now I remember the last time I saw Ben...
It was March 2016, less than a year ago..
He was crying on his mom's shoulder at Sue Hazeem's funeral.
I was very touched by the bond he had with his mom and with Sue Hazeem.

I'm glad I got to see this very special guy one last time.
He was a gentle and kind soul... and I will always remember him, and the kindness he showed to my old friend Sue Hazeem.

I think he had a lot to offer to this world with his kind heart, his uniqueness, his intelligence...he was one of a kind and will be missed.
