Benjamin Nelson Moyls

Ben was an exceptional person. I knew him from Langara College and from the social events. I also shared my office with him for a few years where I enjoyed his great humor, wisdom, and observed his profound connections with his students. Me and my wife have been to his place and had the pleasure of having him and Toby at our house. Occasionally we discussed exchanging our houses because he had toy trains in his house and we have real trains with engineers passing our home. I guess I was not presuasive enough. My children also know him and my son took a linear algebra course with Ben. After the first session my son asked me, " Dad, is he able to finish the course?". Later he would say that Dr. Moyles was the greatest teacher he had ever had. I will always miss him.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to Ben Moyls' family. As a university student I boarded with Ben and Ina in the early 1950's and was their "built-in" baby sitter for Gregory. Both Ben and Ina were very good to me.
I remember Ben as very kind, gentle and always modest. I especially remember how very helpful he was in the house, particularly in the kitchen. To me he was a shining model and is very fondly recalled.

We would like to express our sympathy to the Moyls family. We knew Ben through St. Anselm's where he not only played the organ and led the choir during our two periods there when Desmond was Rector, but we also knew him as an unfailing support to us as a family and to many others in quiet unsung ways. He was a gifted man, a man of great integrity,and great fun. We are fortunate to have known him and send our prayers and thoughts to you at this time.

My deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Ben Moyls. As a young faculty member representing Capilano College I had the privilege of knowing Ben through the BCCUPM meetings. At these meetings the representatives of the emerging colleges were often quite aggressive (myself included) in their efforts to establish a strong college presence in the BC mathematics community. However I recall vividly Ben's remarkable ability to address difficult issues with clarity, dignity and intellect, that has left a permanent impression on me, and has contributed significantly to the development of the BCCUPM. He is fondly recalled and will be missed.

I
would like to express my condolences to the Moyls family. Ben was a
fine gentleman and it was a pleasure to have known him and to have
worked with him.
For many years, Ben was the UBC rep. on the BCCUPM. His leadership and
professional manner were a great example to all of us. His legacy is
certain and we will remember him with great fondness.

To Ben's family and friends:

Ben made very significant contributions towards guiding the provincial mathematics committee (BCCUPM) in maturing to its present status. During his time as Chair, he was faced with several contentious and troubling issues facing the BCCUPM. Only Ben, with his gentlemanly demeanour, his perceptive mind and his understanding words, could have calmed the discussions. Which he did with grace and diplomacy.

His stature as a professor and as a mathematician was fully recognized and respected by the group, and his appreciation of style and fine food further enhanced this image of the complete gentleman. The BCCUPM is indeed fortunate to have been a beneficiary of his capable leadership.

It is sad to say good-bye to Ben, but he leaves a wonderfully rich legacy of which I saw only a small, yet powerful, part. My thoughts and kind wishes go to you, Ben's family and many friends.
