I had the good fortune to know Dr. Payton for only a little more than a year. But I am still shaken by his death because I realized from the minute I met him that I was in the presence of a great man. I work for WGCU Public Media in Fort Myers and interviewed Dr. Payton for a documentary on civil rights that the station produced. His interview was passionate, honest, unflinching and enlightening.
A videographer and a still photographer were with me for the interview. When we came into the house he had some kind of potpourri boiling on the stove. When I said something about it, he said his late wife used to always do that. And I remember feeling distinctly how much he missed her.
Before we left, the photographer wanted to take a rather staged portrait of Dr. Payton, and he asked her to wait a moment while he brought a framed photo of his children to set beside him and be part of the portrait.
Everything about him made an indelible impression on me.

Brother Dr. Benjamin Franklin Payton was a man of the ages. He understood the charge of Alpha Phi Alpha. He was blessed with knowledge and understanding as a leader. He also was a visionary in the realm of academics. I vividly remember when he came to Tuskegee Institute as President he almost immediately decided that it was time to acquire University status. Dr. Payton will always be remembered for his many bold initiatives as the fifth President of Tuskegee University. May God continue to smile on Mark, Deborah and the Payton family.

To The Payton Family:
I was deeply saddened when I heard that Dr. Payton had made his transition on Wednesday, September 28, 2016. I had the honor and privilege to work with him as president of the Tuskegee National Alumni Association. He loved the university, and worked diligently to preserve the legacy while improving the status of Tuskegee University among colleges and universities globally. He always reminded the students, faculty, staff, and alumni that "This is TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY".
Dr. Payton, you are missed, but now you can rest. Thank you!
