Benjamin J. Rowley, 78, of Davenport, has gone to eternal life with his Lord and Savior on Friday, December 1, 2006. His last days were spent at home in Davenport, where he was cared for by his beloved family and wonderful caregivers. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2363 W. 3rd Street, Davenport. Family and friends are invited to his visitation at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, on Monday, December 4, from 4 until 8 p.m. Military graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Post 26, Davenport, at National Cemetery, Rock Island, following the service. A Memorial Fund will be established in his memory.
Benjamin (Ben) Rowley was born July 14, 1928, in Chicago, the son of Benjamin W. and Gladys (Reeves) Rowley. He was educated in the Chicago area until he received a college scholarship to UCLA in California. Ben attended school at UCLA until he was drafted by the Army during the Korean Conflict. Ben served his country in Korea where he was wounded and received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged on December 8, 1952, from Camp Carson, Colo.
Upon his return to the Quad Cities, Ben went to work as an accountant at Bendix Corporation, Davenport. Subsequently, he went to work for the United States Armament Command, Rock Island, where he retired after 28 years of Federal service July 14, 1988. Ben enjoyed fishing, playing cards, board games, and the company of his family and friends.
Ben married his bride, Dorothy Ann Manner on September 11, 1953. He is survived by Dorothy; and daughters, Michelle (Curt) Myhree, of Terra Ceia, Fla., Sherri (Pat) Conrad, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Tess (Chet) Jones, of Eldridge, Iowa, Vicki (Bill) Clark, of Davenport, and Valerie (Steve) Scull, of Long Grove, Iowa. Ben also leaves behind grandchildren, Lydia and Gabe McNeese, Chelsea, Luke, and Peter Myhree, Nicole and Ashley Harris, Amanda O'Neil, Megan Conrad, Makaila and Josh White, Brice Peters, Hailee and Creighton Jones, Jessica, Drew and Alex Clark, and Shane Scull; and great-grandchildren, Kayla, Jayvin, Riley, and Jaden. Other survivors include his sisters, Sonja (Dick) Forsberg, Davenport, Linda (Dan) Ryan, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and Debbie (Doug) Objartel, Cape Coral, Fla.; a brother, Doug (Debbie) Rowley, of Davenport; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Benjamin John II (Johnny), his father, Ben W. Rowley, and mothers, Gladys Reeves and Clara Rowley.
