Bennett Sutton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 4 to Apr. 6, 2023.
Bennett W. Sutton

Bennett "Ben" Warburton Sutton passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2023, in Arlington, Virginia, after a two-year fight with lung cancer. Ben was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on August 16, 1973, to Richard and Ginny (Morris) Sutton and grew up in northern Virginia. He graduated from Madison High School in Vienna, VA in 1991 and earned his undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Mary Washington in 1995 and his master's degree in economics from George Washington University in 2000. He was a Senior Research Officer for the International Monetary Fund, where he had worked and cultivated a global network of friends and colleagues since 1999. With many of his colleagues, he shared a passion for world affairs, following and engaging in cheerful debate about current events. A natural team-builder, Ben served as his department's Peer for a Respectful Workplace representative, tasked with promoting a caring work environment and helping colleagues in distress. Throughout his career, Ben's colleagues and friends found him to be a mentor and catalyst for their careers, a consummate connector of people, and an enthusiastic asset on the soccer field and badminton court.

Ben made his home in Arlington with his wife, Bethany Zecher Sutton, whom he met when they were undergraduate students at Mary Washington. He introduced her to family summer vacations in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and she took him to the mountains and lakes of New England. Together they introduced their children, Luna and Cara, to domestic and world travel. Ben's passion for travel took him from a post-college internship in Budapest to personal and business travel in Europe, Canada, the Dominican Republic, St. Lucia, Mexico, Panama, South America, and across the US. As a traveler, Ben loved to explore neighborhoods on foot to get a true sense of a place and its people.

His international interests were manifested in his love of cooking and soccer. While he enjoyed watching cooking shows and the English Premiere League, Ben got into the action himself as the family chef whose unique take on his grandmother's macaroni and cheese recipe was a favorite; and as a soccer player through his 20s, 30s and into his 40s with Arlington Coed Kicks and colleagues at the IMF. He always brought family, colleagues, and friends together with passion for World Cup soccer. In recent years, he developed an enthusiasm for weekly badminton games in the atrium at the IMF and in the backyard of his home in Arlington.

Ben's greatest passion was ignited when he became a father to Luna and Cara. As a dad, Ben was extraordinarily committed to raising his kids thoughtfully and with the energy he brought to all his chosen endeavors. He enjoyed introducing Luna and Cara to his varied interests and exploring the world through their eyes as well. He and Bethany were a dynamic duo in parenting, each playing to their strengths and always working together to help support their children.

In addition to his wife, children, and parents, Ben is survived by his brothers, Alex (Beth), Marshall (Debi), and Sam (Jill); his mother-in-law, Sonja Zecher; his sisters- and brothers-in-law Carla, Conrad (Kris), Nadine (Dan), and Derek (Ann); 14 nieces and nephews; and many dear and lifelong friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held on May 6, 2023 at 10:00am at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington and one also will be hosted at the IMF. Interment (private burial) will be at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

Charitable contributions to honor Ben's memory can be made to the Arlington Community Foundation for the Bennett Sutton Memorial Fund. Most of my childhood I knew who Mr Ben was, he coached my soccer team while his daughter cara was also in the team. I got close to Cara through elementary school, since she was in the same soccer team as me we got close. Mr Ben always had a great spirit, as a kid I would see how delightful he was to his kids and about his life. The more I started to get close with Cara I often hung out with her, Mr Ben would be so welcoming and comforting about me in their home. I saw how much Mr Ben loved Cara and Luna, how we would do anything to make them comfortable and happy. I always admired how relaxed he was too especially when me and Cara would go all hyper while giggling. Cara is my best friend since the 3rd grade, i´ve always cared about her, Cara has always been there for me no matter what. She gets that trait from her father, the more I see Cara the more I notice she reminds me of her father. Memories of me being welcomed by the Sutton family gives me hope in this world, What Mr Ben brought in this world is amazing. Once I heard the news about Mr Ben´s passing I immediately thought about how Cara feels, all that ever crossed my mind was "how´s cara" I was pretty saddened about it, knowing Mr Ben was one of the most positive person i´ve ever met in my life. Rest in piece Mr Ben. As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

Ben had a great heart. We worked together on the IMF volunteers mentoring program for children at DC public elementary schools. We mentored and tutored children on math and spelling. Ben was always calm and patient. Kids could sense Ben´s integrity, kindness, and respect, which helped their response to the program and their learning process. A little before I retired from the Fund I saw Ben in the HQ building and we had a nice chat-his warm and kind smile is unforgettable. Rest in peace, Ben. You will be very much missed. My sincere condolences to the family. May you find solace in good memories.

In loving memory of a truly wonderful person. I got to meet Ben many years ago (15+) when I worked at the IMF as a research analyst. Ben was extremely helpful, always open to providing a hand & guidance, very amicable, very caring, a mentor to me and many others, and simply but most importantly a truly wonderful soul with a great heart. Thank you Ben for being that wonderful person. My sincere condolences to the family.

Our lifelong friendship has been cut way too short. The stories I could tell of good times, mischief, tomfoolery, and goofing around. Countless hours of soccer together, movie nights with friends, roadtrips, Concerts, and late night meals at Denny's. You would both give and take a good joke and friendly teasing, be supportive when support was needed, and gave wonderful advice. You won the lottery with a great family, and I cannot imagine their grief. Having you as a son, brother, husband, and father is irreplaceable, but the memories and influence you provided has helped make them better people. This is true for all of us who are lucky enough to know you and call you: friend, family, colleague, or neighbor. Thank you Ben for all you have done. I will cherish all the memories, delight in our friendship, and hopefully reflect some of your goodness in myself. Rest in peace my friend, you are truly missed.

I worked with Ben for many years in the Western Hemisphere Department, for a time passing his office every time I went down to get a coffee (which was frequently). He was one of the few people that I never sought to avoid, no matter how much work might have been on my plate that day. He was funny, knowledgeable, kind and always a joy to chat with. Although I left the Fund some five years ago, we kept up an occasional email correspondence and all I can say is that I am so deeply saddened by his all-too early passing. He was absolutely one of the reasons I enjoyed coming to work, and I know he will be sorely missed by all that ever came into contact with his good humor. I never met his family but I know he must have been a wonderful husband and Dad and my deepest sympathies go out to his family.

Ben was an outstanding chef. He championed fellowship around food. I learned his depth of care for family and friends regarding meals. He learned how to cook tofu because I was coming over for dinner. Ben was and forever will be a virtuous, kind, and patient person who spoke with us when we were high or low, played games with us for fun, and fed us literally and spiritually since that's who he was.
