Bernard (Bernie) Joseph Schmidt, 72, born August 30, 1941 passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2014 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Carol (Yurkie) Schmidt and two sons, Joseph Schmidt (Jill) and Christopher Schmidt (Marianne). Grandfather of Taylor, Jaime, Peyton and Griffin; brother of Joan Yurkie (Norman), Ken Schmidt (Nancy), Jerry Schmidt (Marilyn) and Marilyn Rossi (Mike). He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Schmidt and parents, Joseph and Anna Schmidt. He will also be dearly missed by several nieces and nephews. Lastly, he was predeceased by his beloved dog companions: Frito, Brandy and Molly. Bernie attended St. Catherine's grade school in Detroit and was a 1958 graduate of Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods. He served his country in the United States Navy on the USS Saratoga from 1961-1965. He was a hydraulic pipe fitter by trade. From an early age, he was an avid bow and rifle hunter. He enjoyed spending his summer vacations fishing with his family at Lyon's Landing, on Fletcher's Pond in northern Michigan. He loved sports of all kinds. He coached his son's little league baseball team and played fast pitch softball. He loved hockey and enjoyed watching his favorite team, The Detroit Red Wings, play on television. Once retired, he enjoyed playing cards with his wife and siblings and reading, especially westerns. He will be deeply missed by all of his family and friends. Memorial visitation will be held from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 32000 Schoenherr Road (at Masonic) in Warren. Memorial mass 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter Catholic Church, 95 Market Street in Mt. Clemens. Rev. Fr. Michael Cooney will officiate. Inurnment at a later date will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions be directed to Henry Ford Hospice, One Ford Place-5A; Detroit, MI 48202 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
