Bernardine Maaskant Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 14, 2025.
Bernardine "Bernie" Maaskant, 94, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025, in Brick Township, New Jersey.

Born on March 22, 1931, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, Bernardine lived a life marked by devotion to her family, her faith, and her work. She was a Certified Medical Assistant at Dr. Warshaw's office in Westfield, NJ-a role in which she served with dedication and compassion. Beyond her professional life, she was a fabulous mother whose love and care shaped the lives of those closest to her.

Bernie was a devout Catholic and a strong believer in God. Her faith was a guiding light throughout her life and provided strength and comfort to those around her. She found joy in simple pleasures-being with family at gatherings filled with warmth and laughter, spending time near the beach at the Jersey Shore she loved so dearly, and always immersing herself in a good book as she was an avid reader since childhood.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Debbie Brewer and husband Bryan, Charlene Grande and husband John; her son Scott Maaskant and wife Hilda; four cherished grandchildren; and her sister Sonia Mika. Her brother Michael Zuzov preceded her in death.

Bernie's legacy is one of unwavering love and presence. She was always there when her family needed a quick hello or catch up conversation -a constant source of support for her children and grandchildren. Her nurturing spirit will be deeply missed but forever remembered.

May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.

I´ve known my good friend Scott´s mom, Bernie, since we were kids. As we got older, we all started calling her Bernie, and it just stuck. She was always there for Scott and his sisters, giving them the love and support that helped shape them into the kind and caring people they are today. What I´ll remember most about Bernie is her strong faith, her love for her family and friends, and the way she made everyone around her feel welcome and cared for.

To our Mom, who was always there for us and raised us to be the best version of ourselves. She was a true blessing, friend, mentor, and hero in our lives for so many years. The patriarch of our family, that helped create so many fond memories that we will never forget. We'll love you always and forever Mom. And yes, you were so right when you said "You're going to miss me when I'm gone"...
