Bernice Walker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 29, 2024.
Bernice L. Walker, known affectionately as BigNic, was called to her heavenly home on January 26, 2024, at the age of 61, in Bronzeville, Illinois. Born to this earthly realm on February 22, 1962, in Country Club Hills, she lived a life exemplifying humility, gratitude, and an unwavering respect for the sanctity of all creation.

A devout member of the Church of Christ, Bernice's faith was the cornerstone of her existence, guiding her actions and interactions with a gentle hand and a generous heart. Her spirit, a beacon of God's love, shone brightly through her roles as a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness in the hearts of her children, Rick Leslie and Erica Leslie; her grandchildren, Dezier Walker, Cameron Walker, Destiny Walker, Joseph Walker, CJ Leslie, and Kayla Walker; and her great-grandchild, Devon Jeffries.

Bernice was a product of Mary Yates Primary School and HillCrest High School, later continuing her education at Malcolm X College, where she pursued knowledge with the same passion she devoted to her faith.

The community is invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of Bernice's life at a memorial service on February 2nd, to be held at the Burton Funeral Home, 6217 S Ashland Ave, Chicago. This service will not only honor her earthly journey but also her spiritual voyage and the indelible mark she left on this world.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family suggests contributions be made to the GoFundMe page listed on Leslie's Facebook, as a tribute to Bernice's enduring spirit of charity and her commitment to the welfare of others.

The Burton Funeral Home in Chicago, Illinois, is charged with the sacred duty of overseeing the final arrangements, ensuring that Bernice's passage is treated with the reverence and care that her blessed life deserves.

As we reflect upon the departure of Bernice L. Walker from this life, we are reminded to walk humbly, love deeply, and cherish the divine beauty present in all of God's creation, just as she did.
