Dear Betty,
I hate having to write this, but I must say goodbye to you. I’d much prefer to continue thinking that you are still with us.
For forty-five years you were an important person in my life--a treasured friend. I will miss you, but I’ve many wonderful memories of the times we spent together and these memories will always keep me company.
I remember the first time I met you in 1965. As a friend of Linda, you made me feel completely comfortable and welcome in your home in Azusa.
I remember a cold, damp Thanksgiving picnic with you and Linda in a park near the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. It was a fun and exhilarating experience because it seemed so exotic to be sipping hot soup from cups while standing, because the park benches were too wet to sit on.
I remember just the two of us going on a day trip to Tijuana, Mexico in the early ‘70s. We enjoyed shopping, and dining at the restaurant in the Caesar Hotel where we had a delicious Mexican lunch while taking care to avoid their famous Caesar salad and ice in our Margaritas because we considered both too risky. On this trip I purchased a leather, shoulder handbag which I loved and used for many years until it got old and worn out, but which I’ve kept because each time I happen to come across it, it reminds me of the great time we had together.
I remember and thank you, Betty, for being a mom for me at my wedding.
I remember the time we inadvertently became Laurel and Hardy in our failed attempts to open the sliding glass door of your sun room in order to rid it of a large spider, and then rolling on the floor with laughter afterwards with tears streaming down our cheeks.
I remember your good cooking, your watermelon pickles, and the time you made the first green tomato pie I’d ever eaten. It was delicious!
I remember playing many games of Skip-Bo with you and Linda and winning sometimes while we sipped port wine and chatted.
I’ll miss you, Betty, but I’ll not forget you.
I know that when we die our bodies turn to ashes, but I’d like to think our souls, which animate our bodies when we are alive and are so incredible and unique, continue to exist after we are gone. I imagine the souls of our loved ones waiting on the other side for us to join them. So please, Betty, if you can, save a small space for me beside you.
I’ll miss you terribly, Betty, but I’ll not forget you.
Until we meet again.
With much love,
Susan

Linda Duchein, You're my Linda #l, You gave much and re-designed your home, giving your Mother a sheltered space. I thought of you when we heard Dr. Meyer quote from our mentor. C.G. Jung, "The decisive question for man is: Is he related to something infinite or not? ...In the final analysis, we count for something only because of the essential we embody, and if we do not embody that, life is wasted." I attribute to you the choice of that quote appearing in the OC Jung Club's brochure. All the behind the scenes ways you served your mom, your friends, your cats. Call when you want to talk. With care and love. Linda Missouri
