Betty CLEYNDERT - SNUIF Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Jul. 26, 2014.

CLEYNDERT - SNUIF, Betty Gerda
July 7, 1919 – July 21, 2014
At the age of 95, our beloved mother and Omie passed away peacefully on Monday morning, July 21, 2014 at the Garry J. Armstrong Long Term Care Facility in Ottawa. Betty was predeceased by her dear husband Nicolaas, May 1976, in ValCartier Village, Quebec. She is survived by her beloved son Nico in Toronto, and daughter Johanna (John Blakney) in Ottawa, and dearest granddaughter Jennifer, in Toronto. She also leaves behind loving cousins, nephews and nieces in Canada, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United States, as well as many special longtime friends worldwide. Betty Snuif was born in Utrecht, the Netherlands. As a young woman during WWII Betty lived through the occupation of the Netherlands, and upon its liberation she joined her husband Nico Cleyndert in the Dutch East Indies. The family returned to the Netherlands in 1951 and emigrated to Canada in 1953 to ValCartier Village north of Quebec City. In 1976 Betty moved to Ottawa. She worked in the Federal Public Service until her retirement in 1984. During her life Betty found herself in many unique and sometimes challenging situations. She always managed to adjust with thoughtfulness, practicality, style and dignity. She set high standards for herself which shaped her life and which she maintained until the very end. She will be remembered by all those who knew her as a lady of kindness and style. On behalf of Betty her family wishes especially to thank the staff of Gatineau House at Garry J. Armstrong for their loving and respectful care of Betty during the last three months of her life. In particular the family all formed a particular bond with Francoise, Flora, Jiline, Marie, Marcella and Stacy who helped Betty to retain her dignity and made her most comfortable with humour, encouragement and kindness, knowing how she liked to look her best despite her weakening condition. The care given to Betty and the family by all the staff of Garry J. was exemplary. A Memorial Service in Betty's memory will take place on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa. Following the Service everyone is invited to a small reception from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa Humane Society or the Ottawa Mission would be greatly appreciated. Tributes may be sent via Lifetimes at www.beechwoodottawa.ca

Mrs. Cleyndert, I remember how wonderful you always seemed to me. Your afternoon tea, the aprons that didn't need to be tied, the lovely way your homes were comfortable but also very beautiful and full of interest. Thank you for your wonderful contributions to my childhood. You will be remembered with love.
