David McClain Obituary

David M. McClain, 90, died at 8:35 a.m. Nov. 22, 2010, at the Lima Convalescent Home. He was born July 26, 1920, in Lima to Howard and Bertha Madden McClain, who preceded him in death. Mr. McClain was the founder of the Huddle Restaurant and was owner and operator until 1980, when he sold it to his daughter Kay and her former husband, Jim. He was a life member of Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks Loge 54 and the Ohio Horsemen’s Association. He was owner of Dave McClain Stables, where he bred, trained and raced standard-bred harness horses. One of his horses, Quick Song, was sold to an individual in Italy for the highest price ever paid for any horse breed for export. Quick Song later became an international champion. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, where he trained pilots. Survivors include four daughters, Kay (William) Yokas, of Lima, Molly Daley, of Columbus, Becky (Bob) Ordway, of Denver, and Ann Boyer, of Sarasota, Fla.; a brother, Charles McClain, of Greenville; seven grandchildren, Maria McClain, David (Michelle) Wende, Joe (Kelle) Daley, Joshua (Marna) Wende, Megan (Mike) Cummings, Ryan (Jaclyn) Ordway and Emily Petrecca; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, George Killian, of Lima; former wife, Virginia Stockwell, of Lima; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a former wife, Mary Catherine Gutherie McClain; and infant son, John Howard McClain; and a brother, William McClain. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Catholic Church. Father Joseph Sekere will officiate. Burial of the cremains will be later in Gethsemani Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Charles Catholic Church, 2175 W. Elm St., Lima, OH 45805; the Lima Convalescent Home, 1650 Allentown Road, Lima, OH 45805; or St. Rita’s Hospice, 770 W. North St., Lima, OH 45801.
