Betty Rampey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 27, 2025.
Betty Rampey, age 93, died peacefully on April 24, 2025 at her retirement home in Citrus Hills, Florida, after several months of precipitous decline in her health. She is survived by her son Fred Rampey, Jr., granddaughter Erin Rampey, and numerous nieces and nephews across America.

Betty resided in Citrus County Florida since 1997, where she and her late husband Fred Rampey lived in their retirement dream home in the Pine Ridge community of Beverly Hills. There they thrived - enjoying friends, travel in their RV and on cruise ships, and visiting family. They were active for many years in the Hernando Nazarene Church, where Betty was in charge of greeting newcomers. After Fred's extended illness and death in 2013, Betty continued her active life. Her many years of counseling scores of people suffering from alcohol and drug addiction were widely recognized. She relocated to the Grand Living complex in 2018, where she was well known and cherished by both the staff and her fellow residents.

Betty and Fred lived for forty years in Chattanooga, Tennessee, raising their son and living an active life. While Fred focused on his TVA career, Betty worked outside the home getting her GED degree and X-ray technician training, then as photo processing technician, and finally as a top sales consultant with Olin Mills Studios. They were active in the First Nazarene Church of Chattanooga, going on several international Work and Witness mission trips to South America and Mexico. Travel, boating, and camping were favorite family activities, with long road trips across the West and summer camping at Myrtle Beach and the Tennessee mountains. Betty and Fred acquired an RV and drove the Alcan Highway to Alaska, and made many trips to visit their grandkids in Colorado and family across America.

Betty was born in Piedmont, South Carolina, the fourth and youngest child of Hattie and Arthur Davenport, in a tidy "mill house" on Pine Bluff Street. Her brothers JC and Tag Davenport and sister Nellene all preceded Betty in death. Betty and Fred were married in 1948. Following his discharge from the US Army, Betty worked nights in the local cotton mill, operating huge spinning machines to cover family expenses while Fred attained a GI Bill engineering degree at Clemson.

A graveside service will be held at Greenville Memorial Gardens on March 5th, 11 AM, in Greenville, SC, coordinated by the McAfee Funeral Home.
