Betty A. Reardon

Betty was an outstanding teacher of peace and peace scholar. I was so honored when she wrote a letter of recommendation for me for my promotion and tenure. I attended her retirement party at Columbia and conversed with her over the years. I also attended a peace conference she helped put together at Norwich University several years ago. She was a prolific writer and strong supporter of human rights. Her presence in the world surely made it a better place and she will achieve immortality by her legacy. I had her as a history teacher in the early 60s (7th & 8th grades, I think). She gave us a thorough grounding in world history and geography -- fundamentals I still use to this day. And she focused our attention on current events. I did not know about her later extraordinary work as a peace activist. She was an outstanding educator. And clearly a remarkable woman. RIP

Betty was my history teacher at Rye Country Day School in Rye, NY, in the late 1950's and early 1960's. She took me and 7 other students to what we then called the Near East in 1960. That my first trip abroad and we went to Greece, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Cyprus, Israel, and Turkey. Betty opened my eyes as a naive 14-y-o world to the huge and diverse world out there. I have never stopped traveling since. Later on we reconnected and discovered our mutual commitment to Feminism. I am grateful and honored to have known this remarkable woman for most of my life.
